M.P.H. Student Brings Passion for Medicine, Public Health and Sports
Together in Guyana

Parthener Pinder, M.D., an M.P.H. candidate in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, recently travelled to Georgetown, Guyana, with the Guyana-Jamaica Friendship Association (GJFA) for a Symposium and Workshops on Early Childhood Education in collaboration with the Guyana Ministry of Education. The two-day symposium was designed to arm educators with enhanced tools to enrich the learning environment of children, with more than 150 educators from the 11 educational districts of Guyana in attendance. In Guyana, special efforts are focused on the education and health sectors working together to meet the needs of young children, including staff development in both areas. Dr. Pinder was one of five featured presenters of the workshops and combined her knowledge of medicine, public health and sports to conduct two workshops: "The Benefits of Movement and Games for Early Learners" and "Supporting Active Play in the Early Years." SHSP Students Join LEND at WIHD




Three graduate students from the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) have been awarded positions in the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD)'s LEND program (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities). Incoming Dr.P.H. student, Kerry Watson, M.P.H. '17, left, and second-year speech-language pathology students, Shannon Stocks, center, and Stacey Ramirez, right, will join the LEND training program this fall. The LEND program at WIHD is a two-semester interdisciplinary leadership training program funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the federal government at 52 universities around the country. Program trainees include graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from health and education disciplines, self-advocates, and family members of children and adults with disabilities who want to develop knowledge and skills to take a leadership role working with and on behalf of children with disabilities and other special health care needs and their families. SHSP Hosts Special Public Health Practice Council Meeting

Center for Long-Term Care Welcomes Notable Physiotherapist and Philanthropist for Special Presentation

The Center for Long-Term Care hosted a special presentation by notable physiotherapist and philanthropist Valerie Taylor, third from right, on July 26. Ms. Taylor is the founder of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) in Bangladesh. She presented "Creating a Rehabilitation Facility in a Developing Country," describing the humble beginnings of the facility and its transformation to becoming an internationally respected organization focused on a holistic approach to rehabilitation, recognizing that all aspects of the rehabilitation process are vital for its success. Ms. Taylor was welcomed by, from left: Michael J. Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., Is Appointed Associate Dean for Research in the
School of Health Sciences and Practice

Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Health Science, has been named associate dean for research in the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP). In her new additional role, she will lead the development and implementation of strategies for achieving the school's research goals, identify and communicate sources of external funding, and facilitate and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. She will also work closely with the faculty to develop and write proposals, lead initiatives to write and develop strategic interdisciplinary college-wide sponsored research projects, and establish internal and external research partnerships. Dr. Heck will focus significant effort toward the development and translation of funding-ready and funded projects, as well as building sustainable research enterprises. Read more aobut Diane E. NYMC Unveils the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and
Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters


A dedication ceremony marking the unveiling of the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters at 7 Dana Road was held on June 5.The Center, the first of its kind in the Hudson Valley, will combine New York Medical College's globally recognized assets in disaster medicine and medical countermeasures with individualized precision medical strategies against biological and chemical threats and seek to translate research findings in order to protect Americans from the threat of catastrophic bioterrorism and man-made disasters. The Center was created with funding from New York State with the support of New York State Senator Terrence Murphy, center. On hand for the event were, from left: New York State Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs; Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino, and Michael J. Reilly, Dr.P.H. SHSP Applauds New Honor Society Inductees

The School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) celebrated its newest members of the Delta Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, and Alpha Eta, the national honor society for allied health professionals at its second annual induction ceremony on May 18. This year, Delta Alpha inducted 15 new members and Alpha Eta welcomed 17 new members, including students, alumni and faculty who meet the societies' rigorous criteria. View the photo gallery here. New York Medical College Receives $3 Million to Establish The Catherine and Vladislav P. Hinterbuchner Professorship and Chair

New York Medical College is the recipient of a $3 million gift to establish the Catherine and Ladislav P. Hinterbuchner Professorship and Chair in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan to support teaching and training of medical students and residents as well as foster research. The endowment is from the estate of Catherine Hinterbuchner, M.D., who led the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine -- as the College's first woman chair -- and was chief of rehabilitation medicine at both Metropolitan Hospital Center and Lincoln Hospital in New York City for nearly 40 years.

Eduardo Lopez, M.D., second from left, has been named the inaugural chair. A special dedication ceremony was held at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan on August 10 to mark the occasion. Dr. Lopez, who presented "Primary Prevention of Brain Injury" at the event was joined by, from left: Edward C.
