Devorim

The second and third grade group focused on two Torah stories this week. They read from Genesis about the Garden of Eden and linked that to the Jewish Value of Shmirat Ha-adamah (taking care of the earth), the students made an illustrative example of the snake, who according to the Midrash (interpretation) of the Torah encouraged Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. The Midrash goes on to say that the snake had 4 legs before telling Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge, and as punishment

NESHARIM

The fourth and fifth grade students talked about the Jewish Value Tzedek,Tzedek, Tirdof (Justice, Justice, You shall pursue). The students talked about the root of the word Tzedek and looked for examples in Siddur Sim Shalom of other times that root word is used and what it can mean in different contexts. The class talked about Jewish SUPERHEROs, who wrote about the obligation we have to change the world and right injustices. The students compared just and unjust situations and designed SUPERHERO headbands with symbolic representations of Justice.

Run-a-Thon

In order to connect with Purim in a meaningful way and both observe the Mitzvah of Simchat Purim (Joy of Purim) and Matanot Laevonim (Giving to the Needy) we are going to do a costume run-a-thon to raise money for a charitable cause in City Park. Each student will have a fundraising form they can use over the next few months to try and raise as much money they can. In their classrooms they will discuss where they would like to donate the money. We will announce an official date soon!
