SIA School Newsletter

December 6, 2022

Dear Parents,

PY Kindergarten Parents, please join us for a preview of first grade this Friday, December 9, 2022 at 8:15am in the SIA/Miller Library. Learn how the skills your child is learning in Kindergarten will prepare them for First Grade and beyond. Meet the First Grade Team and learn what opportunities await your child in First Grade.

The Parent Volunteer Organization is excited to bring back the SIA Chanukah Shop!  Please send in New or “Like New” Items for the Chanukah store through December 8, 2022. Donation bins are clearly labeled in the Strelitz hallway. Please make sure items are clean and in good condition. We especially need items for Moms, Dads, Grandparents and older siblings. Students will shop with their classes beginning Monday, December 12, 2022 through Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Students will purchase items for $1 each to give to their loved ones. Proceeds benefit the Parent Volunteer Organization.

Just a reminder that next week is our last week before winter break, Monday, December, 19 –Monday, January 2, 2023. I hope everyone enjoys the well-deserved break and comes back to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 refreshed and ready to get back to work.

Below you will see some reminders for the week ahead.

SGA Twin Day

What a fun Twin Day organized by the SIA Student Government Association! SIA Students and Teachers enjoyed "twinning" at school last Wednesday and brought money to buy lemonade at lunch to raise money for special SGA student led projects.

Third Grade Fossil Hunters

Our third graders are fossil hunters! In their "Sharing The Planet" unit, the third grade has looked at animals that have shared this planet across the span of history. They started the unit by exploring adaptations in the "Best Beak For the Job" lab. They used the conclusions drawn from this to understand why and how animals and plants survive with the adaptations that they have. They also learned about what happens when animals can't adapt to their surroundings. Sometimes this happens because of humans, but these scientists responded to a simulation of an oil spill, testing different methods for containing spills and researching how they can be prevented. When a mysterious clue was delivered to the room, they became fossil hunters, finding fossils throughout the week and using them to draw conclusions about animals of the past. They even used the information that they learned in this unit to predict what types of animals might live in the future. Science is amazing!
