SIA School Newsletter

May 24, 2023

Dear Parents,

We are so proud of our International Baccalaureate fifth grade students, as yesterday they held their culminating PYP exhibition project. This year the fifth graders explored the concepts of food insecurity and Tzedakah. Our students worked with various organizations in Hampton Roads in an effort to help get more food to people without. This project demonstrated the “Who We Are” theme in the IB Primary Years Program. A special thanks to all those volunteers, teachers and mentors who guided our students throughout the year. Great job fifth graders!

Please mark your calendars, school will be closed Friday, May 26, 2023 for Shavuot. Shavuot marks the first grain harvest of the summer and the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai to the children of Israel. Early year’s fullcare will be open. In addition, Monday, May 29, 2023 school is closed in observance of Memorial Day. Fullcare, Sundown and JCC SDO are all closed.

Next week please join us on Friday, June 2, 2023 for our Final Early Years Family Shabbat Sing-a-long at 9:00am in the Pavilion (weather permitting) followed by our EY4 Surfing Up Ceremony! I look forward to seeing you all there!

Wishing you all a wonderful rest of the week!

PVO Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

SIA held a wonderful PVO Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, May 19. We celebrated our terrific room parents and incredible PVO committee with a tasty breakfast and good conversation! We look forward to the events coming up next school year. Thank you for everything you do for Strelitz International Academy!

SIA Chess Club

The SIA Chess Club concluded its season with the annual SIA Chess Tournament. Congratulations to Adielle Uduaghan-1st Place, Victoria Kerzner-2nd Place, Niv Rubin-3rd Place. Jaxon Gordon and Zane Uduaghan received honorable mention for 4th and 5th place. We are so proud of all of these students. This year's tournament was held in memory of our first Chess Coach, Mark Bland, who lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, May 14. Coached by Michael Williams, a representative of the Hampton Roads Chess Association, SIA students gain great insights to the abstract strategic game of chess. We hope to continue to expand the opportunities our students have to connect with other chess players in Hampton Roads and have some great plans for next year. If you are interested in private chess tutoring over the summer contact Janet Jenkins, Director of Primary Years, at jjenkins@strelitzacademy.org.

Visit from WHRO

WHRO Public Media visited our second grade class on Tuesday, May 23! The students learned about symmetry and asymmetry, all in preparation of their Top Secret Mission! The class was challenged to help Ms. O fix her juice boxes because "Symmetric Al" turned them from rectangles into triangles. We'd say the second graders were successful and the mission was accomplished!

Fifth Grade Exhibition

On Tuesday, May 23, the fifth graders held their Fifth Grade Exhibition. Throughout the year, the fifth grade class has been working with various organizations such as ForKids in South Norfolk, Jewish Family Service and the Fred Heutte Center in Norfolk. The students presented posters on their research and learning, and shared the different parts of their tzedekkah (charity) journey with Primary Years students, parents and visitors. After visiting each presentation, participants were invited to help make lunches for people in need. Each class had a different job in the process, and 100 lunches were made and donated to Ghent Area Ministry to be distributed to the many people they serve. We are so proud of the fifth grade class!
