The Growing Need for High Density Polyethylene Meter Enclosures
By Stuart Box, Vice President of Engineering, Production and Quality
|
The last three decades have seen significant changes in the market for meter enclosures and lids. Historically, meter enclosures were made from concrete or cast iron and the lids were cast iron or ductile iron. Due to their weight, the products required several workers to move and install, and often resulted in breakage and loss. The construction and waterworks industries saw improvements with the development of polymer and plastic materials to manufacture these products. Innovative use of plastic materials delivered a lightweight box that could offer traffic rating when designed properly, and provide a white interior, which enabled better visibility from the previously common black interior. In addition, the new lids offered easy access to the meter.

With 2021 in the books and 2022 already upon us, this seems an appropriate time to reflect on the past and look ahead to what we can expect in the coming year. To begin, I want to reaffirm SIGMA’s past, present, and most importantly, future commitment to delivering industry-leading service. We value our relationships with our customers and consider them our true partners. To that end, we will always say “yes”—we will continue to find solutions, we will locate inventory, and we will go the extra mile.

|
Sizes 30” and 36” have been added to the existing 42”, 48” 54”, 60”, and 64” range are now in stock and ready to ship!
|
SIGMA delivers an innovative and convenient solution for the common issue of ductile iron pipes becoming slightly out-of-round: the re-rounding feature on the ONE-LOK Wedge Action Restraint. This unique feature enables the pipe to be restored to roundness during installation without using any internal equipment such as hydraulic jacking.
Steve McDonald, SIGMA’s Pipe Restraint Product Manager, explains the significance of the re-rounding concept of our wedge-action restraining glands for ductile iron pipes.
“The re-rounding feature is a patented and revolutionary feature because it provides a solution for the occasional event when larger diameter ductile iron pipes onsite experience out-of-round or ovality issues. The ‘re-rounding’ capability allows for immediate reconciliation of the ductile iron pipe’s diameter and ensures proper restrained joint assembly at time of installation. When required to utilize this ‘re-rounding’ feature, the installer or contractor can bring the pipe back to its normal outside diameter, thus enabling the pipe spigot end to fit appropriately into the mechanical joint outlet or ductile iron pipe bell. No internal equipment is required, such as hydraulic jacking, that can cause damage to the integrity of the standard cement mortar linings or more expensive interior coatings.”

Meet SIGMA: Orlando Gaddis, Maintenance Supervisor and Product Specialist
|
Orlando Gaddis joined the SIGMA team in the Alexander City Manufacturing facility five years ago. He started out as a temp employee hired to work in the trim department. He mastered that job with ease, and soon pursued an opportunity to work as a machine operator. Orlando was successful as a machine operator, and then quickly mastered the Ferry machine. Soon, he began working on the Rotoline, and within a week, he was a pro. From that point, Orlando assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the entire facility, and was promoted to maintenance supervisor.
Jess Johnson, Operations Manager at the SIGMA-Raven ALX location and Product Specialist comments, “There has never been a time when I have asked Orlando to take on a task that he didn’t quickly jump on and excel. We are blessed to have him on our team.” Jeremy Love, Operations Manager at the SIGMA-Raven Ohio plant adds, “I first met Orlando when I went to Alex City to train in preparation for my job at the Ohio facility. Within five minutes of meeting him I could tell he was someone special. He has a very positive attitude, and he was instrumental in the startup of the Ohio plant. He came to our facility, worked long hours getting everyone up to speed, always with a smile on his face. His reliability, consistency, and strong work ethic really inspired the team in Ohio, and we are always asking when he’s coming back to visit!”
When he’s not working hard at the SIGMA-Raven manufacturing facility, Orlando loves to travel with his wife. Their favorite destination is Philadelphia. The couple has also run a day-care center for 24 years, and have helped raise many local children. Orlando has two sons, a grandchild that he adores, and he spends his leisure time restoring old cars and riding his motorcycle.
SIGMA thanks Orlando for his excellent work and wishes him continued success.

Spotlight on SIGMA
We at SIGMA place tremendous value on our SIGMA family. With that in mind, we celebrate the joy and success of our employees and their loved ones, and we share their good news...

From the Northeast Region:
|
Congratulations to Jim Carr, Operations Manager, on the arrival of his granddaughter Maggie James. She was born on December 20, weighed 7 lbs, 10 oz, and measured 20 inches in length.
|
Congratulations and thanks to all of the supporters of this year's "Pink Out!” Employees in the Northeast Regional Office participated in this annual event that supports the Young Women's Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. With several breast cancer survivors among them, the observance is especially meaningful for the group. They sold "Pink Out" t-shirts as a fundraiser, wore them to work on a specific day, and the proceeds were donated to the foundation.
|
Congratulations to Victoria Ruffino, Accounts Payable Associate, on her granddaughter Gianna Ruffino's success as a competitive cheerleader. Gianna's team, the Edison Jets Pop Warner Cheer Team, competed in the National Cheer Tournament in Orlando Florida and came in 2nd place. Congratulations to all of the team members, coaches and their families!

From the Southeast Region:
|
The Southeast Regional Team also observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The office hosted a cookout to raise money and spirits. This is the second time they supported this cause, but this year it was more personal, because of the journey of their very own Survivor/Super Woman, Inside Sales Rep Denise McWhorter. Denise was diagnosed with breast cancer over a year ago, and after undergoing treatments, to date is cancer free! To celebrate this wonderful news, her colleagues decided to sell hamburgers and hot dogs to raise money for charity, as well as donating lunch to the Cancer Center in Alexander City where Denise received her treatment. With the help of the United Way, all of the money raised was given to The Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch in AL, a favorite local organization. Congratulations to Denise and best wishes for continued health, and a big SIGMA shout out to the organizers of this wonderful event.
