Welcome to SIMCenter's Quarterly Update
As many of us are still working from home, businesses continue to evolve into new norms. If you hadn’t used Zoom before March, you are probably very familiar with it now. While some organizations have suffered, SIMCenter has remained stable. We are fortunate to have Ohio Super Computer provide us access to advanced modeling simulation technologies from our homes so we can provide our sponsors with a competitive advantage through modeling, simulation, and analysis.

Over the past quarter, SIMCenter has secured a $2.5M grant from DOE, continued expanding efforts in the medical field, and started new education initiatives. I hope you enjoy reading more about these activities in the stories below, as well as learn more about our staff, student, and board member showcased in our newsletter.

Stay safe and healthy.

Ohio State SIMCenter is set to receive $2.5M DOE grant to optimize residential wood stoves
The US Department of Energy has granted the SIMCenter with $2.5 million to develop and test low-emission residential wood stoves. A multidisciplinary team led by SIMCenter director Shawn Midlam-Mohler will spend three years developing modeling and automation technology for the development of these high-efficiency stoves.
CFD tech applied to heart valves shows potential to benefit the field of medicine
Reducing aerodynamic drag in airplanes, automobiles and now heart valves, VG can do it all.

Using proven CFD techniques, a recent study headed by researcher Zhenyu Wang found that vortex generator use on bi-leaflet mechanical heart valves shows potential to reduce risk of blood damage for patients.
Simulation enhances Ohio State University's COVID-19 testing system
In order to ensure that Ohio State's COVID-19 student testing program ran as efficiently as possible, testing program planners reached out to the SIMCenter to run simulations on the process. The simulations helped the program planners identify potential bottlenecks in the process and meet their goal of regularly testing thousands of students.
Rodrigo Auza Gutierrez improves automobile aerodynamics
Researchers like Rodrigo Auza Gutierrez, who studies high-velocity airflow and external vehicle structures, are tasked with ensuring the safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. While the work is challenging, Rodrigo is up to the task if it means he's finding new ways to make vehicles safer.
A Passion Found - Yishen Gin finds love of engineering in graduate school
Yishen Gin didn't find her love for computer science until after finishing her undergraduate career, but that hasn't stopped her from reaching her engineering goals as a graduate student. While pursuing her master's degree, Yishen has worked alongside SIMCenter researchers to develop a software tool used for simulating autonomous vehicles.
Board Member Highlight: Pat Majors
An early love for cars led Pat Majors to pursue a career in the automotive field. Now, his unique experiences in the tire manufacturing industry help him guide the SIMCenter as a member of the External Advisory Board.
Filling the Gap - Emily Nutwell helps engineers get the training employers desire
For Emily Nutwell, it's important that no engineer misses a career opportunity because they didn't receive the right education.

After realizing that many engineering education programs don't provide students with the in-depth training in simulation and modeling employers are looking for, Emily chose to fill the gap, designing the SIMCenter's own professional development course in Finite Element Principles.
