Enhancing the lives of women and youth

in our community and the world.

Want to learn more about our club? Join us for a "Get to Know Us meet up on Monday, June 10 at Lake Tahoe AleWorX at 5PM!

2050 Lake Tahoe Blvd Suite #2050

Today's meeting was opened by President Shelly and our invocation provided by Lydia pointed out some lessons that Gardening can teach us about Life. Just to name a few--Slow down and have patience; plants emerge and bloom in their own time. Stop comparing, accept yourself as you are whether you are a daffodil or a rose. Balance is key, too much water or fertilizer can be toxic. Gardening is a process--it may take months or years to "fill in" and realize the final goal. At this time of year, take pleasure in your garden and be in awe as your plants come back to life.

Sunshine goes out to Theresa's daughter for her knee pain that it is not serious, Karen H. as she recovers from shoulder surgery, Lisa C. and her family as they deal with illness, Abby P. for strength to deal with her dog's ACL surgery, and Elizabeth P for healing of her hand so that she can do her job.

Our guests included Sally Ross. Welcom, Sally. Glad you came to check us out. Hope you will think about joining us permanently.

Today's Speaker was Kim George, Fire Marshall with South Lake Tahoe Fire and Rescue. See their website here.

As Fire Marshal, Kim's job is all about wildfire prevention. She helps homeowners with Defensible Space (removing hazardous materials around the home) and Home Hardening (using fire resistant materials on the roof, windows, vents, and siding of the home).

Defensible Space.Kim provided those in attendance with the requirements for Public Resource Code 4291 which requires 100 feet of defensible space around your home. SLTFR staff are inspecting homes in the city now to determine compliance with this requirement. You can view the document here. The goal with these inspections is education for the homeowner, but they will site infractions and they will fine if there is no effort to comply. SLTFR has numerous resources to help homeowners meet the California Code requirements. Check out their web page here.

Home Hardening. Wildfire researchers at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) have spent years researching wildfire through both field and lab studies. Now, in collaboration with other wildfire community experts, IBHS has identified the mitigation actions critical to reducing your wildfire risk. The goal is that completing these actions and receiving a certificate should lead to insurance companies offering to insure your home. See more information here. These actions have been verified in scientific testing by numerous insurance companies. SLTFR is working on being able to do the assessments and offer certificates.

Firewise Program. Firewise is a neighborhood education and evaluation program where volunteers assess properties, offer information about defensible space and home hardening, and help the community to bring properties into compliance. Insurance companies will give discounts to Firewise neighborhoods. More information on the program can bee see here. Al Tahoe was the first firewise neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe.

Catastrophe Modeling. Presently, insurance companies don't consider future possibilities of wildfire. They have their own proprietary requirements which they do not share. But Kim tells of her experiences viewing their satellites that can see the pine needles on your roof and how much tree canopy covers your home. Using Catastrophe Modeling will allow insurance companies to consider fuels reduction efforts, forest resiliency, prior burn scars and the health of the forest to make their assessments. Jessica Morse is the former Deputy Secretary for Forest and Wildland Resilience at the California Natural Resources Agency who is now running for US Congress in California's 3rd District. She has secured $3 Billion for California for fire resiliency and has ideas on how to push insurance companies to insure California homes.

Thank you Kim, for a very informative talk and information to help make Tahoe fire safe. Kim is happy to answer questions you may have and can be reached at: kgeorge@cityofslt.us

Bread and Broth needs volunteers for Mondays and Fridays:

Thank you so much for your current or past involvement with the Bread & Broth organization. Without you, our food outreach services which help ease hunger for hundreds of our community neighbors would not be possible.

Currently, Bread & Broth needs individuals who would be interested in assuming leadership roles in the organization.

Bread & Broth’s Advisory Board is seeking an individual for the position of board Secretary. B&B’s Advisory Board meets quarterly, and the Secretary is responsible for recording the meeting minutes and ensuring that all documentation from the meeting is compiled and filed with the meeting minutes.

Bread & Broth’s Second Serving (weekly Friday meals served at the LT Community Presbyterian Church) serves a simple entrée and a hot soup which are provided by various local community restaurants. Currently B&B is seeking 2 to 3 individuals to coordinate and pickup soups from restaurants and deliver them to the Presbyterian Church on Fridays. The soup coordinator is responsible for interfacing with the existing list of restaurant soup providers to schedule soup donations and drivers are needed to go on Fridays and pick up soup from the week’s designated soup provider.

Second Serving is also looking for assistant cooks to support the Lead Cooks at their Friday meals from approximately 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. once a month. The meals are simple entrées like meatloaf, pasta dishes, and sloppy Joes.

For those of you with leadership skills, B&B is looking for individuals to train as Lead Assistants for the Monday Meal dinner (2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.) and the B&B 4 Kids program (Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.) Training is provided and you will be assisting the Team Leads in overseeing and managing the duties of the team volunteers. Lead Assistants are assigned to a Team that volunteers once per month.

If you are interested any of the volunteer positions mentioned above, please contact Carol Gerard at 310-256-1019 or carolsgerard@aol.com
