Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra

Enhancing the lives of women and youth

in our community and the world.

Want to learn more about our club? Join us for a "Get to Know Us meet up on Monday, June 10 at Lake Tahoe AleWorX at 5PM!

2050 Lake Tahoe Blvd Suite #2050

Today's meeting was opened by President Shelly and our invocation was read by Nancy from Lydia's book. In tribute to the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion, "What a debt the free world owes those souls on those beaches. May we always be mindful of their bravery, may we honor their sacrifice by being good citizens, and my we alway remember their courage."

Sunshine goes out to Lois' daughter Brittany for a proper diagnosis and treatment of her numbness, our own Lydia, and the family of John Cristando who passed this week. He was the owner of John's Tahoe Cleaners and a WWII veteran

Our guests included Connie from Connie's Clothesline. She is moving her thrift shop to the Shopping Center near Orchids. You can catch here there on July 1. Welcome, and we hope to see more of you!

Today's meeting was all about R.O.S.E. -- Recognition of Soroptimist Excellence. After each expressing our gratitude for something in our lives, President Shelly spent some time thanking each of us for all the ways we serve Soroptimists and our community. We then tried to put the cut up heart back together, but things didn't work out perfectly, mirroring life. President Elect Lisa then handed out raffle prizes as she does each month during our SiTSterhood meeting.

Dorian Guzman and Valery Gonzalez from the SITSter Club at LTCC (which we sponsor) were on hand to help judge senior projects along with about six other club members.

Healthy Women Healthy World committee members participated in Bread & Broth on June 3! Looks like these ladies are serving up delicious food. In addition, the club donates to Bread and Broth's "Adopt A Day of Nourishment".

The Education Committee and Friends completed the yearly book distribution. Over 3,000 books were sorted and given to teachers at all the LTUSD elementary schools, STMS and Zephyr Cove. Co-Chairs Cookie Rork and Laurie Brazil had it so organized that we were able to complete the bags in under three hours! Besides the co-chairs, Lisa Cali, Nancy Muller, Joann Tillson, Amy Simons, Wendy David, Shelly Martinez and Jean Bergner helped.

After all the bags were full, we loaded them into our cars and delivered them to the various schools for distribution to the teachers. Thanks to the Education Committee, each child from K-8 in the Lake Tahoe area will have a book of their own to take home and keep in their home library.

Thank you to Nancy and the entire LYD committee for your excellent work! And a big thank you to us all for showing up and doing big, small and in between things that truly make a positive impact on the world.

The Mt. Tallac Super Star Student for May is Joseph Vazquez. Joseph is a Junior, and the Mt. Tallac staff recognized him as representing the school's core values of gratitude, commitment, advocacy, respect, and kinship. The SITS Youth, Scholarship, and Enrichment committee provided Joseph with a $75 gift card for his excellent work and character.

Bread and Broth needs volunteers for Mondays and Fridays:

Thank you so much for your current or past involvement with the Bread & Broth organization. Without you, our food outreach services which help ease hunger for hundreds of our community neighbors would not be possible.

Currently, Bread & Broth needs individuals who would be interested in assuming leadership roles in the organization.

Bread & Broth’s Advisory Board is seeking an individual for the position of board Secretary. B&B’s Advisory Board meets quarterly, and the Secretary is responsible for recording the meeting minutes and ensuring that all documentation from the meeting is compiled and filed with the meeting minutes.

Bread & Broth’s Second Serving (weekly Friday meals served at the LT Community Presbyterian Church) serves a simple entrée and a hot soup which are provided by various local community restaurants. Currently B&B is seeking 2 to 3 individuals to coordinate and pickup soups from restaurants and deliver them to the Presbyterian Church on Fridays. The soup coordinator is responsible for interfacing with the existing list of restaurant soup providers to schedule soup donations and drivers are needed to go on Fridays and pick up soup from the week’s designated soup provider.

Second Serving is also looking for assistant cooks to support the Lead Cooks at their Friday meals from approximately 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. once a month. The meals are simple entrées like meatloaf, pasta dishes, and sloppy Joes.

For those of you with leadership skills, B&B is looking for individuals to train as Lead Assistants for the Monday Meal dinner (2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.) and the B&B 4 Kids program (Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.) Training is provided and you will be assisting the Team Leads in overseeing and managing the duties of the team volunteers. Lead Assistants are assigned to a Team that volunteers once per month.

If you are interested any of the volunteer positions mentioned above, please contact Carol Gerard at 310-256-1019 or carolsgerard@aol.com

Our age is merely the number of years the world has been enjoying us!

Word of the Day: Remembrancer

Term from medieval times for an official who reminded the baron of business pending. We might need some of those people in present time to help us get everything done! Also, to remember this day in history D-Day 1944, 80 years ago when we fought valiently to keep our freedom.

Consider beginning your Thursday with us!

We will start meeting in the Aspen Room next week at 7:30 a.m. - don't forget! The Aspen Room is at the Recreation Center close to where we've been meeting. Will will return to the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center on Thursday, April 18 for the Scholarship Breakfast.
