President Paula welcomed everyone by zoom today as we had another bit of snow last night. We are all looking forward to some sunshine so put those shovels away!
Our Invocation was provided by Lydia which encourages us all to press on, get outside, and enjoy, event when the weather is upon us. Keep in mind that it's countless single snowflakes which create endless drifts of snow and even in the depth of winter, there is an invincible summer within each of us. When things are tough, find your invincible summer!
Today's guests included Janet Blumberg again. Whoohoo! We loved that you joined us.
Sunshine - With sadness we mark the passing of Dr.Fritz Wenck. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. Fritz was a huge supporter of Tahoe and a beloved Optimist member.

Today's Speaker: Mariel Berei, South Lake Tahoe Manager had this to say about herself 'I moved to South Lake in 2007, and worked for many years in the restaurant industry here at Mott Canyon and The Lucky Beaver before joining the staff at HSTT almost 4 years ago. I grew up on a farm in rural Iowa, so I greatly enjoy every outside activity like snowboarding, hiking, camping, and all that the Sierras have to offer. I love the people and pets of Lake Tahoe and take tremendous pride in being the best steward I possibly can to this community I'm lucky enough to call home.
Mariel discussed the mission of HSTT to save and improve the lives of pets which leads directly into all of their programs and services that they provide and boy, is it amazing!
While their main shelter is in Truckee, our local shelter, which began in 2019, is located at 3438 Lake Tahoe. They have several programs and services in our community thanks to 12 employees and hundreds of volunteers. HSTT also works closely with 40 rescue partners and because of that they find homes for 100% of the treatable and adoptable pets put into their care! 99% are live releases. They are working so hard to ensure that animals find a proper and caring home.
Programs include: Dog Training, Kids Summer Camps, Pet Assisted Therapy, Pet Loss Support Group, Pet Pals, RUFF, and a Fall Speaker Series. They also have several services. They include Community Spay & Neuter, COVID-19 Assistance, Neighborhood Cat Assistance, Community Pet Financial Assistance, and a Community Pet Pantry.
How does all this happen? All money is raised by donations, grants, program fees and merchandise that they sell. No government allocations.
Mariel shared some fun facts:
- 25% of pets entering the shelter are pure bred.
- Less than 7% of pets are turned into the shelter due to the animal's health or behavior problems.
- Only 10% of animals are altered on intake which means there are a lot of animals who could make more animals out there!
- In 4 years just ONE cat and ONE of her offspring can produce 2880 more cats! We need to be responsible humans and have animals spayed and neutered.
- If ONE our of FIVE people who BUY pets from breeders would adopt a pet instead, we could eliminate animal shelters.
How can you help? ADOPT or FOSTER an animal! Spread the word, share the website of HSTT. Volunteer! If you have someone 15 years or younger, they can volunteer but must do so with an adult. Host an event or fundraiser. Become a donor! You can donate money, food, and pet supplies.
Go to their website and read the success stories and check out this great video they created to thank their volunteers here. To find out more, email Mariel at info@hstt.org and be sure to follow them on Facebook here. It's a very active page and lets you know all the events currently going on!
Thank you Mariel and all who work at HSTT!
