Enhancing the lives of women and youth in our community and the world.

Today's Meeting Review!

President Paula opened our meeting and read the Invocation from Lydia who was not able to attend.  The invocation was a tribute to education.  Although education may be costly, an ignorant population is much more costly.  Let's uphold education by studying hard, supporting our teachers, and learning something new everyday.

We welcomed members who joined us by Zoom this morning. This is a wonderful option on days you may be out of town, under the weather, or simply aren’t able to make it to the meeting in person.  Www.sitszoom.com

Sunshine goes out to Lydia as she helps her mom.  Also to all the firefighters and displaced people from the mosquito fire and other hot spots around the country.

Today's speakers included a long time friend and community member, Cheyanne Lane, Tahoe Youth & Family Services, Supportive Services Manager and Shelby Musants, Case Manager for the Transitional Living Program

A focus of Cheyanne's over the many years has been Drop-In Center where client's “Get Recharged, Get Resources, Get Respect”. Located in South Lake Tahoe, California the Drop-In Center provides a safe, non-judgmental, welcoming environment for runaway, homeless and street youth from the dangers of the street and to get their most basic needs met.

The Drop in Center provides:

  • Emergency Shelter for youth up to the age of 18
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Socks
  • Showers
  • Laundry
  • Birth Certificates
  • State ID's
  • Sleeping Bags
  • Tents
  • Help to obtain employment
  • Help with college and vocational training

Since receiving a grant in 2019, TYFS has expanded their services to homeless youth by providing Transitional Housing.  An estimated 4.2 Million youth experience homelessness in the US over a 12 month period.  And California had the highest number of homeless people including 24,000 homeless youth in 2019. El Dorado County had 114 homeless youth during that time period.  There are many reasons for homelessness among youth, including abuse  and or abandonment by their family members, economic hardship, rejection due to their sexual orientation, ageing out of foster care, release from juvenile justice system with no resources.  Youth with no diploma or GED have an increased risk of being homeless.  Homeless youth are at an increased risk of human trafficking due to heir vulnerability and having no safe place to sleep at night.  They are often sexually, mentally and physically abused leading to substance abuse to escape.

TYFS has been able to use this grant for housing assistance for homeless youth.  The transitional Living Program managed by Shelby provides up to 18 months of housing for youth aged 16-22.

This program allows youth to get on their feet and learn to live independently.  TYFS manages 3 homes for youth who are housed with roommates and are required to  be working, looking for a job, or going to school.  They must also engage with case management.  Violence its not tolerated and will be cause for "involuntary discharge".  Another program, Rapid Re-housing, helps youth who just need a little assistance to get into rental housing such as a deposit.  This assistance declines over a few months until the youth are able to handle the payments on their own.

These two programs have allowed TYFS to house 32 youth and keep them off the streets, while allowing them to live in the communities they call home.

TYFS is always looking for Host families to provide temporary, emergency  housing for homeless youth.  You can find out more information on their website.  Tahoe Youth and Family Services

SEPTEMTER is Suicide Prevention Month:

Here's an added item for your knowledge! Suicide claims the lives of more than 47,000 Americans per year. It's a serious threat for the young and our older adults. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and there is much to learn. One important item to SHARE around the nation is that one can easily reach The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988. We have two great sources of information. NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness has valuable information here. And click here for added resources from Barton Health.
