Today's Meeting Review!
President Paula opened our meeting on such a beautiful morning here in Tahoe. We are so very lucky to call this place home.
Our Invocation this morning was provided by our Lydia, who frankly has had numerous circumstances this past year which would bring anyone to their knees but her sharing of life after hardship has her good sense of humor shining through and carrying her forward. For many who suffer the unbearable, it's amazing how trivial other things become. Life goes on and our sense of humor will get us along the path if we allow it to envelope us once again. Find humor so that you can leave your sadness behind, even if it's just for a moment. Thanks Lydia.
Sunshine this morning started out with seeing the happy faces of those we haven't seen for a bit at meeting. We love being with each other. We especially love that our Jean Williams drives up from the Valley and dear, you're looking marvelous! Our best to Pat O and hubby on their move to the Valley. It's only granite that divides us so think of hitching a ride up the mountain!
On a more serious note, recent fires and then needed rain has caused havoc for many of our neighbors in the Woodfords/Markleeville area. Long time residents who relocated to the Woodfords area could use the help of our community. Larry and Casey Braun's home was recently swallowed by a mud slide as the mountain gave way and insurance doesn't cover mudslides. Unbelievable. Here's a story to give you details on the situation and also a like to a GoFundMe page that has been set up to help them out. Any and all donations would help as they lost everything. Also keep our business owners in Markleeville in your hearts and assist them as well. The recent rain in the area has cut the community off as well as incapacitated it with mud everywhere. They are working hard to clear the mud in the town and the road from 89 will hopefully be open in two weeks. Right now the only access is over Monitor Pass. The Chamber has set up a GoFundMe page for businesses as well. Visit their website here for the link and all current information.
Added quick reminder from President Paula, she has arranged a table for ten for this Saturday's Speakeasy at the Pope House from 7 - 9:30. If you're going, get your flapper dress ready and contact her directly! It's going to be the Bee's Knees! Here's a story about the event!

Our Speakers This Week : We hit a gold mine with these two amazing women!
|
Kim George - Fire Captain/EMS Officer
Kim George knew she wanted to be a paramedic. She felt a calling to help people at an early age. She knew emergency response was for her and that led her to the Fire academy. She believes she helped her male counterparts in the academy regard her as a person, not just as a female firefighter. She has never seen anything she can’t do.
Kim is responsible for many of the public education elements of the Fire Department and she's been a huge asset to our community since joining the department in 2001.
|
Today Capt. George was joined by counterpart Amanda Milici of TRCD, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, to speak to us about defensible space and wildfire preparedness. And before we begin, let's remember, that a SAFE community is up to each and everyone of us, not just our agencies. Included in this review are links to some of the major players that help to guide us to creating safe homes and a safe community. Whether you live in the city or county, all agencies are working together. Together these ladies provided us with a ton of information that is useful to our entire community so please SHARE this newsletter!
The Tahoe Resource Conservation District's (Tahoe RCD) mission is to promote the conservation, stewardship and knowledge of the Lake Tahoe Region’s natural resources by providing leadership and innovative environmental services to all stakeholders. Tahoe RCD is one of nearly 3000 Conservation Districts across the country helping people to protect land, water, forests, wildlife, and related natural resources. Tahoe RCD is a member of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, Tahoe RCD collaborates with local fire districts, public land management agencies, and neighborhoods to manage the Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities (Tahoe Network).
The Tahoe Network strives to prepare people and property for wildfire by coordinating efforts on a neighborhood scale. The Tahoe Network connects residents to fire protection districts and public land management agencies to create defensible space and ember awareness; educates residents through the Tahoe Living With Fire website, publications and workshops; and empowers neighborhoods to work together with neighborhood leaders to prepare for wildfire.
There are a vast number of agencies working together to help homeowners defensible space around their homes. We have in Lake Tahoe, several community pockets which are now designated as Fire Wise Neighborhoods recognized by the National Fire Protection Association. There is a Fire Wise Workday for the Al Tahoe area this Sunday. Read about the details here. These are grassroot groups, spearheaded by local citizens in their neighborhoods to make these efforts come to fruition. We all hope that down the pike, these designations will help with our homeowners insurance woes so it benefits everyone to consider getting involved now.
The CA Insurance Commissioner, Ricardo Lara, is very interested in working with our community amongst others, to do all that we can to not only protect people and property but to put together legislation which will provide possible discounts for homeowners in Fire Wise Neighborhoods and to protect them from losing their insurance. He shares Wildfire Recovery and Preparedness information on his website. here.
Each of us can continue to keep our homes as safe as possible. Defensible space requires you going outside and taking stock in your property. Many folks have added rock around their foundations, they've eliminated pine needles, limbed trees to avoid ladder fuels, moved their firewood away from the house and added fire proofed tarping. Check out the above websites for information on how you can prepare your home and family.

Support for our Mt. Tallac Students! The pandemic knocked our schedule off a bit but we are putting the final touches on the www.artsaleformttallac.org website where we will be launching an online art sale thanks to the talent of Mr. Keith Williams. His beautiful wife, Sandy Williams, had a heart filled for the youth at Mt. Tallac High School. All of the funds raised through this event will go to support our students! The sale will be launched Sept. 1 and close on Sept. 30. Our website is being built with the final touches and people can begin to bid on Sept. 1, so please SHARE this information. People can also simply donate to our efforts at the school! For more information, contact Wendy David.

Thought for the Day
Our Cookie Rork LOVES words. She's a bit of fanatic. So in keeping with her love and respect for words she provided us with one from the 17th Century. The word is SPUDDLE. Spuddle means to work inefficiently while achieving absolutely nothing!
We hope that you can SPUDDLE today wherever you are.
