Today's Meeting Review!
President Paula opened our meeting today on this amazing day in Tahoe.
Our Invocation this morning was provided by our Lydia and we always love it when she speaks about her Nonna. Like many Nonnas around the world our amazing women would "save" things for special occasions. The China would come out on special occasions, the scarf would be worn only to church, a ring when all dressed up because they were thought of as too good for just everyday. Lydia's message today reminded us that everyday is a special day so crack open that expensive perfume, grab that crystal out of the cabinet and just enjoy.
Sunshine this morning. Just a reminder to everyone, no matter where you live, our nation is experiencing a huge blood shortage. Blood components are needed for transfusions, cancer treatments, surgeries, and so much more. Donate in your area and donate often. Tahoe, see below for August dates.
A big thank you to the Fire Wise community of Al Tahoe and the fire agencies in CA and NV for their participation. Lisa Huard especially loved hearing the sound of all those branches going into the chipper! This was a great community activity after Capt. Kim George's talk at SITS last week.

Our SpeakersThis Week : Sonja Keller and Bryan Pond of AirMedCare Network, our air ambulance network.
|
Sonja Keller is the Membership Manager for AirMedCare Network and enjoys sharing the lifesaving mission of air ambulances and their role in the EMS system. Why, she's also a member of the Soroptimist International of Colfax club! Sonja has worked in EMS for 20 years. She will be sharing how your local air ambulance providers CALSTAR, REACH and CARE FLIGHT are staffed, aircraft specifications, service area, dispatch procedure, types of calls and associated costs. We learned today the many services under the AirMedCare Network and no matter where you are, you can gain membership by calling Sonja directly at 530-648-6455. She's the expert for setting you up and explaining all of the partners in this web of services.

Bryan Pond, long time friend and supporter of SITS, and currently Tahoe's Chief Flight Nurse at our CALSTAR Air Ambulance base at the airport.
Bryan's nursing career began back in 1986 where he worked in hospitals until 2000. He then underwent far more training and joined the CALSTAR team in 2000 and this is where he found his niche. He was one of the individuals who opened up the air base that we have here at our airport and we are so grateful to have this service in our community. Years ago when Bryan brought information to SITS about CALSTAR, the system was local and small. Now the emergency air ambulance system has grown and is not only nationwide but you can have services while traveling abroad as well.
|
Why be concerned about air ambulance service? The reasons are many.
- The average cost of air transport, without coverage, can be $40,000-$50,000. Medicare does NOT guarantee payment.
- The Golden Hour following an emergency is what the system is based around.
- Air Ambulance Staff are specially trained. They perform duties beyond ground ambulance staff.
- For the cost of one fancy dinner out, you could have a lot of preventive coverage for your entire household should something occur.
- Locally here in 2021 (during COVID) ,CALSTAR provided 240 transports from Barton, a Trauma 3 hospital, to other hospitals with Trauma 1 and 2 designation and to this date in 2022, they have already transported 169 individuals. Here in Tahoe they see traffic accidents, hiker extractions, skiing accidents, heart attacks, and pediatric needs just to name a few, all of which need to be transported to different hospitals for specialized care.
- Are you an individual who travels in the US? The huge network that you would be covered under can be seen here.
- Are you an individual who vacations abroad or do you have a student abroad? AirMed now has a global medical response solution as well. With the purchase of AirMed, it's a YEAR long purchase, not travel insurance that you buy for a single trip.
Their website is constantly updating the information and programs. Take time to check it out at https://www.airmedcarenetwork.com and then SHARE this information with your family and friends wherever they are. Just because there's a big building in the community that says hospital on it, don't assume that appropriate treatment for you or a loved one can occur there.

Having the correct coverage is vital so my advice to you is call SONJA! She'll review all the memberships with you based upon your need and you'll be amazed at how inexpensive it is. It's because of membership that we have this service in our area. If you never have to make use of this service, good for you! Know that your dollars keeps the facility active for others in our community.
And to our Nevada friends, you are fortunate in that you can purchase multiple years for memberships which saves you even more money.
SITS Members, as a "business" we have an added incentive in a discount. If you are a business, again, most anywhere and you'd like to talk to Sonja, do so!
And if you're a parent of an adult or adult-like individual either on their own of with your grandbabies, a membership is a most excellent gift item for piece of mind. Again, one transport paid out of pocket or even 20% under an insurance is COSTLY and ground transportation can often times take longer than the Golden Hour of response.

Support for our Mt. Tallac Students! The pandemic knocked our schedule off a bit but we are putting the final touches on the www.artsaleformttallac.org website where we will be launching an online art sale thanks to the talent of Mr. Keith Williams. His work with bronze, wood, ceramics, and water colors is remarkable and he wanted to pay tribute to his beautiful wife, Sandy Williams. Sandy had a heart filled for the youth at Mt. Tallac High School. All of the funds raised through this event will go to support our students! The sale will be launched Sept. 1 and close on Sept. 30. Our website is being built with the final touches and people can begin to bid on Sept. 1, so please SHARE this information. People can also simply donate to our efforts at the school!
