Enhancing the lives of women and youth

in our community and the world.

Today's Meeting Review!

The meeting this morning was opened by President Paula.  Lydia's invocation was a brilliant comparison between how we can support one another and how a flock of geese supports themselves--have a common goal, seek help, empower others to lead, protect each other, stay committed to your values.

Sunshine:  Sending love, hugs and healing to two of our members, Jeanne Prestella and Brenda Heldorn.

Guests:  We were pleased to welcome Andrea Solis, guest of Joanne Tillson and our district 5 Director, Holly Nash.  Holly, pictured below with President Paula,  gave a quick rundown on upcoming events and district meetings.

Our program this morning was delightful presentation by two young women who we sponsored to go to the UC Davis TechTrek week. Below the girls and their directors are picture left to right: Meara Donahue, 8th grade student at STMS, Asha Ryan, 8 grade student at Whittell, President Paula, Janet Lynds, SLT Tech Trek Co-ordinator, workshop presenter and dorm mom, and Stephanie Facchini, dorm mom and Co-director of the UC Davis Camp.

Each year since 1998 AAUW (American Association of University Women) has designed and managed a residential STEM camp for middle school girls.  The first camp started at Stanford, and has since expanded to 20 other campuses.  NorCal AAUW sent 94 girls to camp this year, all funded by donations from members, and supporting community groups.  SI Tahoe Sierra donated $2000 for scholarships this year. Here is a brief recap of the presentation by Meara and Asha.

CORE CLASSES:  Meara was in computer science and learned how to use editing software to create a PSA to encourage people to use reusable water bottles.  Asha was in anatomy, where she studied different body systems such as skeletal, respiratory, etc. and dissected different animal parts to see how these systems work.  These classes were the main focus every morning after breakfast until lunch.  Other core classes offered were Genetics, Nutrition/Food Science, and Engineering.

WORKSHOPS:  After lunch the girls had a choice of different workshops to attend, such as Heat Islands, Electric Motors, Electrify Your Greetings, Girls with Confidence, Forensic Tools for Triage, Paramedic/EMT, Deception by Science, The Power of the Sun, Girls Scouts, Getting to College.

PRESENTATIONS:  In addition, there were special presentations such as Safe Credit Union Bite of Reality, Professional Women's Evening, which was a favorite, and Astronomy/Stargazing.

FIELD TRIPS:  The organizers made good use of the facilities on the UC Davis campus.  Trips to the Mondavi Center (another favorite), Chemistry Demo, Bohart Entomology Museum and the Vet School enhanced the girls experience.

ACTIVITIES:  And in between all of this, the girls still had time for Zumba, Crossfit, Concentration, silly songs, writing in their journals, and mooing at Cows!

The experience included staying in college dormitories with a room mate and eating in the commons cafeteria where they were required to eat fruits and vegetables every day!  Although the girls expressed missing their parents, they were excited to be there, and sad to leave their new friends at the end of the week.  The program is so popular that many former Trekkers apply to be junior counselors when they get into high school.   One of these junior counselors is Emmie Fiel (pictured below), a junior at STHS.

Thank you Asha and Meara for sharing your experience with our club.  We were so impressed by your confidence, enthusiasm, and ability to be flexible when our technology failed you.  And thanks to AAUW and all the dedicated women like Jan and Stephanie who work so hard to put this program on for our future leaders in science.

Update on Tech Trek Sponsored 'Trekkers'

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

In July 2022 AAUW sent two South Lake Tahoe middle school students to Tech Trek, a weeklong STEM camp at UC Davis. Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra sponsored both of these students through our Middle School Projects Committee: Asha Ryan from George Whittell (now a 7th-12th grade school) and Meara Donahue from South Tahoe Middle School. Sponsored by AAUW was Junior Counselor to the camp, Emmie Fiel from South Tahoe High School.
