Today's Meeting Review!
President Paula opened our meeting.
Our invocation was ready by Past President Nancy on behalf of Lydia. Reminding us that every season can be the best season if we care to look at it that way. Every moment is unique and it is up to us to look for the beauty, even during the hardest of times.
We welcomed members who joined us by Zoom this morning. This is a wonderful option on days you may be out of town, under the weather, or simply aren’t able to make it to the meeting in person. Www.sitszoom.com
Sunshine goes out to the family and friends of beloved teacher Barbara Cloutier who passed away recently. Barbara taught at STMS for many years and was an inspiration to her coworkers and her students. More sunshine needed for our dear SITSters Lydia and Janna ..our hearts go out to you both. Love and wishes for a speedy recovery to Tina as well.

Our Speaker Today
Heather Segale - Education and Outreach Director - UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.
Heather is responsible for providing the intellectual and administrative leadership in the education and outreach component of the mission for TERC. Segale manages the Tahoe Science Center (Incline Village) and Eriksson Education Center (Tahoe City), develops and maintains exhibits, coordinates education programming, pursues funding opportunities, and manages grants for education exhibits and programs. She also coordinates TERC's participation in regional outreach and oversees the marketing plans for TERC's two science education centers.
|
UC Davis has played a leadership role in research efforts at Lake Tahoe for almost half a century. With funding from federal, state, local, and private sources, TERC continues to address a broad range of research that spans the land, air, and water. Our research is rapidly transferred and disseminated to the public through our active public education and outreach programs. Through partnerships and collaborations with resource agencies, we are providing the science to guide the better management of Lake Tahoe.
The Impact of TERC's Research
-
Long term clarity record: This has been the gold standard for measuring the degradation and restoration of Lake Tahoe.
- Identifying the sources of clarity-reducing pollutants: The majority of particulate pollutants that contribute to reduced lake clarity come from urban watersheds, that cover only 10 percent of the land area. Such knowledge underlies management strategies by resource agencies.
-
Controlling invasive species: Oxygen-depriving barriers placed in the lake reduce the local Asian Clam population.
-
Detecting the effects of climate change: Since 1968 lake temperatures have warmed, peak snow melt has advanced by an average of 2 weeks, and the base of the food chain is changing in response.
- Understanding a complex ecosystem: Real-time sensors provide immediate information on water quality changes and the driving forces behind them.
-
Sophisticated modeling tools: The predictive capacity of our models allows for better planning for future changes and greater preparedness for emerging challenges.
-
State of the Lake Report: Since 2007, TERC has published an annual summary of its research and documented the long-term changes to the lake. The annual State of the Lake report provides the science that federal, state, and local government agencies use to assess the lake's health and make management decisions.
The Tahoe Environmental Research Center has been collecting data for over 60 years and is constantly updating what they know about Tahoe. The website if FULL of fascinating information. The lake clarity is monitored every 10 days and there are numerous underwater monitoring stations around the lake. There are some gaps however and if anyone with a pier on the East Shore cares to offer to have one of the stations under their pier they would love to hear from you.
Algae blooms have increased by 300% in the last few years. An increasing and worrying problem.
The center offers tours which need to be booked in advance here
Each year they produce a State of the Lake report which can be seen here.
Citizens can also help out by downloading the app and sending in photos. Download the app here
