Enhancing the lives of women and youth

in our community and the world.

Today's meeting was opened by President Shelly

A lovely invocation by Lydia eloquently described her experience as a young woman with the migrant workers around her area and some of the social programs designed to help them. She touched on the Bracero Program and the  A-TEAM — Athletes in Temporary Employment as Agricultural Manpower- program.  No matter who is picking the produce, the work is back breaking and never ending. The next time you are enjoying fresh produce, stop and give thanks to the hard workers who made it possible.

Guests included Greg Bergner, Rick Pence, Peggy Blowney and Marianne Poohachoff

Sunshine goes out to Derek in his search for employment and housing.

Today's meeting was a special presentation by Living Voices, curtesy of Tahoe Arts Project. The program has been performed at area schools this week thanks to TAP. This one-woman performance brings history to life.

This morning Roz Cornejo joined us and performed "La Causa". We Discovered César Chávez, Dolores Huerta and the farm workers movement, through the actions of one young woman who becomes a powerful voice for her community.

In the 1960's, Marta and her family step out of the fields to join thousands of other migrant farm workers in a new nonviolent protest movement to improve their own lives by fighting for civil rights and against racism and indecent working conditions. To read about her amazing story please check out Living voices

The current challenges are implementing laws for heat protection, increasing wages and decreasing number of hours allowed to be worked in a day. Children age 9 and older are still working in the fields, but at some locations travelling schools are being set up to help with educating these kids.

The Economic and Social committee donated $1000 to Tahoe Arts Project this year to keep programs like this coming back to our area schools.
