Where Are They Now

Greetings fellow SIUSOM Plastic Surgeons! I have been asked to write a few paragraphs about “where I am now”.
Well, to be brief, in the same place I started almost 35 years ago. I finished my SIU General Surgery residency in 1982 and SIU Plastics in 1984. With the help of my husband, Curt, I started a solo private practice in Melbourne, Florida in August of 1984 (the place where Curt was raised). I became very busy, very quickly with the usual trauma and emergency cases. Reconstructive cases and cosmetic cases followed and in 1987 I moved into a new office we built, brought on a partner (Vicki Vitale – previous microsurgery fellow at SIU) and had a son (Hunter). In 1989 we added another partner (Petra Schneider – SIU Plastics) and credentialed our two office based surgery suites through AAAASF. I think we were one of the first 3-woman plastic surgery private practices around at the time. We added an overnight stay room after another year and the practice continued to grow. Dr. Vitale-Lewis left in 1983. I became Chief of Staff of the local hospital in 1996 and 1997. Dr. Schneider-Redden married and left in 1998. I was solo for a while. In August of 2000, the Florida Board of Medicine called a 90 day moratorium on office-based surgery facilities, so I started using local Ambulatory Surgery Centers and Curt and I rented the surgery center part of our building to a vascular surgeon who needed space for his vascular lab. For all of this time I was interested and involved with ASPS, the silicone implant controversy and ban in 1994 and other issues, culminating in the ASPS Presidency in 2007. During those hectic years I used physician extenders but eventually went back to doing the minimally invasive work myself. I had other renters in the building throughout the years and had shared space with another plastic surgeon for a few years in early 2000.
I should mention that none of this would have been possible were it not for the comprehensive training and tremendous surgical experience I received at SIUSOM and the love, support and counsel of Curt Guy, my husband of almost 39 years now.
I am back to solo private practice, but have scaled back now at the age of 66. I mostly do outpatient and elective cases. I look forward to selling my building and moving to a small boutique space to continue to work at a leisurely pace. The area is growing and several new practitioners have come to town. I am not sure about complete retirement yet, but I think about it from time to time. The best to all of you!
Roxy Guy
