St. Johnsbury Academy Students

Honored for Advanced Placement Success

St. Johnsbury Academy has offered AP courses since the 1980s, and continues to experience great success in the program. A total of 206 St. Johnsbury Academy students took 426 Advanced Placement exams in May 2023. The school’s 2023 passing rate, determined by the percentage of students who scored 3 or more points out of a possible 5 on an exam, was 83.0%, well above both the 2022 state average of 22.8% and the national average of 21.6% (U.S. public high schools).

St. Johnsbury Academy was also honored to receive the 2023 AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school allowing motivated students to stand out from their peers in college admissions, earn college credit, skip introductory college classes, and develop college-level skills. St. Johnsbury Academy currently offers 32 Advanced Placement courses.

AROUND CAMPUS

The Asian Culture Club has celebrated the upcoming Lunar New Year by sharing their traditions in Chapel on Monday and Tuesday. On Friday, the students will enjoy special dinners before welcoming the new year with a celebration on campus. Images and videos from the week can be viewed here.

Monday's theme, Anything but a Backpack, was a hit as students came up with unique ways to carry their books to class. In addition to laundry hampers, there were buckets, drawers, baskets, wheelbarrows, a red wagon, a kayak, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and, yes, even a kitchen sink. View Winter Carnival photos here.

Members of the Outing Club were on the ice in Westmore over the weekend for some great climbing, beautiful weather, and breathtaking views across Lake Willoughby. View photos and videos from the day here.

Members of the Robotics team visited MVP Robotics in Bradford on Friday. The team met one of their First Robotics team's sponsors, established mentoring relationships, got advice about their robot and the prototype cycle, and saw their robots in action. Students even got a chance to drive one of MVP's robots in the parking lot to learn about acceleration and maneuvering algorithms. Fun fact: the robotic dummies used at last Thursday's NFL Pro Bowl Precision Passing Event were MVP Robotics' products.

This year marks the fourth year that SJA has partnered with the NEK Council on Aging to create and distribute Valentine's Day cards to elderly St Johnsbury community members. The valentines are sent to local individuals, hospitals, and nursing homes to connect with others in the community and brighten their day. Cards were made during advisory time, after school, and during free blocks in the library.

February is CTE Month, and Mr. Palmer's woodworking students were in the metal shop learning to weld from Mr. Mitchell, several of them for the first time. Great team effort!

Photos from last week's home gymnastic meet can be viewed here. Galleries from the winter season can be viewed here.
