You Belong in Our Community
Since the beginning of the COVID crisis there has been a marked increase in attacks on people of Asian descent here in America. The hateful rhetoric of some of our leaders—juvenile name-calling, bitter scapegoating, and specious claims about the virus being the fault of “China”—has created the conditions for anti-Asian racism and violence. Rhetoric spurred violence at the Capitol in January, and as our freshman students reading Shakespeare this semester are learning, rhetoric has abetted violence since the time of Julius Caesar. Words matter; language can change the character of a country.

Four Students Qualify for MathCON Finals
Four math students from St. Johnsbury Academy have been invited to attend the virtual MathCON 2021 Finals on May 1, 2021. Finalists are students who have scored in the top 10 percent of their respective grades. The students are sophomore Ben Carpenter of Weston, Massachusetts, and seniors Emma Keenan of Peacham, Vermont, Yicheng Shen of China, and Luke Young-Xu of North Haverhill, NH.

Senior Photographer Captures Gold Medal
Senior Kay Conner won a national Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her black and white analog photo, Anxiety. Kay's photo also won a Gold Key at the state level. The photograph will be part of a national virtual award ceremony held on June 9th. More information can be found at artandwriting.org.

Senior's Novel Earns National Honors
Senior Lily Barth has earned a national level Silver Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her novel, "Til the Sun Drips Blood." Lily earned a Gold Key at the state level in the Novel Writing division earlier this year.
Here is an excerpt from her novel:
"Penny had thought that she was too weak to run, too broken to even walk on her own. She discovered quickly that her legs were moving underneath her just fine, striding long lengths in the rubble while dodging huge chunks of fallen concrete wall. David led the way, his hand still grasping her arm, and she could hear his panicked breaths through the near darkness. The loud, ferocious scuttle behind them was coming close on their heels, and the deafening wail of the siren began to sound again. Penny breathed heavily, feeling the uneven concrete pound underneath her feet. The room was alight with the red glow again, washing the walls in an alarming, primal shade."

Public Speakers Participate in Rotary Speech Contest
Clara Andre's (left) speech about her involvement in the Caledonia Hockey Club took first place in the Rotary Speech contest during last week's virtual meeting of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club. Also competing were Moises Zetune Zaga and Qingyue Li. With her first place finish, Clara advances to the Rotary District 7850 competition on April 14th.

We will be having an informational Post Secondary Plans meeting for all juniors, parents, and guardians. The event will take place from 6-7 pm and will be conducted over Zoom (Check your email for more info). This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the College Application process as well as other post-secondary options and will help you understand how to best support your student.

It was Cupcake Wars in Chef B's kitchen last week. Flavors included pound cake with maple buttercream, chocolate with mint buttercream, vanilla with raspberry and lemon, apple cider with maple buttercream, lemon with blueberry, red velvet with butterscotch drizzle and a raspberry, and banana with vanilla dipped banana chip. |
