SJA WELCOMES NEW FACULTY AND STAFF

St. Johnsbury Academy has added nine new faculty and six new staff members to start the 2024-2025 school year. Headmaster Dr. Sharon Howell said, “This bright and accomplished cohort of new teachers, administrators and staff are already bringing a new energy to campus, and I’m grateful for the rich contributions they are making to our learning community. This new group joins us at a time of immense need—for expertise and excellent teaching, and also for vigorous, creative and compassionate engagement with our students both in and out of the classroom. It’s exciting to see this talented new group stepping up and jumping in. We’re so fortunate.”

AROUND CAMPUS

Mr. Mackenzie kicked off our Monday Music series this week with an original composition titled Lost and Found. The performance can be viewed here.

Field Semester students focused on Nature Journaling this week. This interdisciplinary course introduces Academy students to the ecology, history, and culture of the Northeast Kingdom. A collaborative effort between the Science and English departments, the Field Semester allows students to get outside the usual boundaries between ideas and envision new solutions to local scientific and cultural problems. Students spend three blocks a day dedicated to the course. While based on SJA's beautiful Field Campus, the program's 75-acre home base, students and faculty travel around the region for many unique learning opportunities. Field Semester students might be found identifying and documenting local tree species, interviewing community members about how they experience Vermont's agricultural character, paddling across a lake to collect water samples, wading in a river to observe ancient glacial sediment, or tracing the life of a piece of cheese in our local economy. 

Intro to Culinary students worked on knife skills and baking cookies this week at The Hilltopper Restaurant.

Senior Mary Lopes and Weston presented in Chapel on Tuesday. Weston is a Service Dog in Training, and as part of her capstone project, Mary is fostering and teaching Weston as he prepares for the next level of training.

Mr. Shea's film students began shooting their next blockbuster on the trails next to Brantview Lawn this week.
