Dear SJA Rising Kindergarten through 8th Grade Families,

We hope you and your loved ones are well and healthy. Please see the attached "2020 SJA Summer Reading and Summer Math" requirements (Mathletics certificates are required and the listed IXL skills, per grade level, are highly recommended). The Summer Reading has been in the eNewsletter the last two weeks.

Our teachers have been quite busy this week closing out the school year and starting to prepare for August. Some teachers have already begun their professional development, by participating in three-day Math workshops and in three-day Language Arts workshops, as well as updating their curriculum pacing guides while analyzing Terra Nova scores. Our faculty is also starting to work on obtaining their Google Teacher certificate.

I will continue to communicate with you over the next couple of weeks.
Have a fantastic summer!

Many blessings,

Mrs. Roberts
Principal

Distance Learning Spotlight
The annual 5th Grade Tea Party is a recent tradition at St. Joan that signals the end of elementary school as they transition into middle school. This year, the tea party went virtual on May 27th! Students were asked to dress up in their Sunday best. Students received a sample ahead of time on how to create their own place mats with place setting diagrams. During the tea party, students learned about the history of tea, proper table and tea etiquette, and how to set the table. Mrs. Colleen Spencer, an eighth grade parent and Home and School Mom, who arranges the tea party every year, has provided us with the slides for "Victorian Tea Times". As tradition, parents wrote a special letter to their child expressing their love and pride for them, as they prepare to transition to middle school.
Sixth and Seventh graders had to "Break Out" in from a virtual Escape Room on Thursday, May 28th. Students had to complete several puzzles in groups using the different room features on Zoom. The fun and challenging activities features math, science, literature and spanish topics and questions. Thank you to all of the teachers for your hard work and for serving as moderators of this game. What a great way to wrap up the year.
Kindergarten Graduation
Our littlest graduates, Kindergarten, had their own special car parade on Thursday, May 28th. Students walked down the red carpet to get their diploma and a special cookie cake from their teachers, Mrs. McConnell and Ms. Adler, Mrs. Roberts, Msgr. McGraw, and Mrs. Roberts. Earlier in the day, each family logged onto Zoom to hear a farewell message from Mrs. Roberts, a special prayer by Miss Hiponia, and to watch a special video with photos from their school year. Parents also received personalized scrapbooks with student work from the beginning and end of the year and other photos from the year. Congratulations!

Dear parishioners,

Please accept this update on what is happening in your parish. Your entire pastoral team is praying for you that you are surviving this pandemic and are safe. Some changes have been required in parish life. Our daily Masses are being celebrated at 8:15am and 12:15pm in the church. We have extended the livestreaming of the 12:15pm Mass especially to show our love and respect for our senior parishioners, who may feel particularly isolated during this time of social distancing. At this time, we are not permitted to have Masses or events in our Chapel. Pastoral visitation of the sick is not permitted either at our hospital, our hospice, or our local nursing homes. Consequently, we invite any parishioner or family member with a sick person in their home, to contact the Parish Office and a priest will pay an in-home visit for the Anointing of the Sick. Eventually, God willing, our Eucharistic Ministers will be able to begin their ministry again and bring the presence of the Lord to all in need.

Our normal Parish Office hours will continue Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm. One of your parish priests is available every day for the Sacrament of Penance and on Saturdays from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Our Parish School is hard at work in preparation for the upcoming school year. Some changes will be required and all of them are being carefully considered with the probability of new procedures being necessary for the safety of our children and staff. Please be assured that your school continues to focus on excellence in learning, faith formation and character-building for all of our precious children.

Bishop Barbarito has appointed our associate, Fr. Dominic Toan Tran, to become the new pastor of St. John the Evangelist in west Boca Raton. This is Fr. Dominic’s first appointment as a pastor, and all of our prayers and gratefulness go with him. Parishioners will have an opportunity to say goodbye to Fr. Dominic on Sunday, June 21 st  at the 10:45am Mass. Also on Sunday the 21 st  at the 10:45am Mass, parishioners will have the opportunity to welcome our newly ordained, Parochial Vicar, Fr. Robinson Aza.

As a final point for reflection, it is important for us to remember that which is at the heart of Christianity, love of neighbor, concern for justice, for peace in human relationships, acceptance of diversity, and in particular actions to change the evil of racism and its consequences in our beloved country. This change will only be accomplished with the help of prayer, and with conscious and active decisions and actions, that will help make our country “the land of the free” for all peoples. Remember that we can be socially distant but spiritually close.

With prayers and blessings,

Msgr. Michael D. McGraw and the St. Joan of Arc Pastoral Team
