Checking in: a barren and dry land
Dear Friends,
I was at a local shop yesterday, and asked the owner how the summer had been for him. He said, “Smoky; dry; hot.” He looked weary.
One thing I’ve always loved about Summit County is residents' constant awareness of and gratitude for all that’s precious in this place. No two days are quite alike, and no morning dawns exactly like the one before on the Tenmile. Still, these past weeks have been stressful. We’re grateful, but we also have room to be worried, and watchful. If you haven't yet read Frances' most recent Living Parable, by all means do.
It was great to hear Matt Benedict speak a few weeks ago about fire preparedness - we want to do what we can to be reasonably organized for emergencies. As somebody whose primary objective is to care for all of you, though, I also want to name the importance of finding a way to abide in relative peace in the midst of alerts, alarmism, and fluctuating air quality.
The truth, of course, is that wherever we go, God goes with us:
Where can I go then from your Spirit?
where can I flee from your presence?
If I climb up to heaven, you are there;
if I make the grave my bed, you are there also. . .
If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me,
and the light around me turn to night,”
Darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day;
darkness and light to you are both alike.
Psalm 139
If you could use support this summer - spiritual or practical - or would benefit from having an evacuation “buddy” or team to contact should the need arise, please let me know. I myself feel better knowing there are a few people who will have me on their radar in the event that we need to take action.
As ever, I encourage you to pray for rain, for our brave firefighters, and for all the people affected by Colorado’s current fires.
Under that heading, I also want to let you know that, for the moment, our siblings at St. George’s in Leadville are okay. Rev. Melissa says the most important thing we could do to support them is to come visit, eat, and shop in town. Their businesses are taking a major hit in the shadow of the Willow Fire.
I love you, and God loves you. Let me know where you are and what you need.
Bless you,
Beth+

Sunday Forum, July 26, with
The Rev. Robert Franken and Dr. Nancy Kinney
This Sunday, two individuals who serve as Ministry Partners for Episcopal Relief and Development for our diocese will preach and present at St. John’s. The Rev. Robert Franken will be offering a sermon and his wife, Dr. Nancy Kinney, will provide a presentation at the Adult Forum.
Episcopal Relief and Development is our church’s agency providing emergency assistance after disasters as well as support for focused development efforts worldwide. For over 80 years, Episcopal Relief and Development has worked with an extensive network of faith and community partners in the U.S. and globally to advance change in communities affected by injustice, poverty, disaster and climate change. Over 3 million people annually benefit from the programs of Episcopal Relief and Development through four interconnected priorities: early childhood development, women and girls, climate resilience and disaster response. Bring your questions!
On Sunday, August 2, Patrick McWilliams will share insight into the world of early Christians. His topic is, "Pagans Were Religious and So Were Christians". Come learn about 2nd century Christians, Cynics and worshippers of Asclepius.
Maggie Ducayet will update us on Summit in Honduras later in the summer.

Prayer Request: Colorado Wildfires
Lord, we ask for your protection from the spreading wildfires across Colorado. We ask for the protection of those fighting in harm's way. We pray for those coordinating efforts in support and relief. Be with those besieged by fire, guide those who evacuate so that they may find care and comfort in a safe place; protect their homes and their pets, their neighbors and their friends, so that they may return home to a loving community.
We grieve for the loss of human life, animal life, plants, and trees, and the scarring of the earth. We are saddened for the original custodians of the land, the First Peoples of the land, and the poor and marginalized disproportionately affected by the fires. Turn our sadness into compassion. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son, who abides with you and with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Don’t Click on that e-Invitation! | |
A new game is afoot for our friends, the scammers.
During the past week, I’ve received no fewer that three separate e-vites (or emails posing as e-vites) which seem, convincingly, to come from members of our congregation.
My friends, these are quite sophisticated scam attempts - much better than the ones we’ve learned to identify in the past. I myself clicked on the first one I received - which seemed to be from Fr. Munson - before thinking, “I probably shouldn’t have done that.”
Here’s why I’d call these messages sophisticated:
- The email addresses (the ones posing as “from” our friends) are authentic
- There is nothing in the body of the email to immediately trigger your intuition that something is “off” - no grammatical mistakes, no strange requests, etc.
- They ask you to do seemingly innocuous things:
- Click a link to view the invitation
- Enter your email address and a password to view the invitation, or to RSVP
Best as I can tell, these scams are built to either extract credentials from you that can be used to hack into sensitive information, or to download malware (malicious software) into your system. We don’t want either of those things to happen.
HOW TO BEAT THE SCAM:
#1 Gold Standard Approach: Whenever you receive an e-vite, contact the person who seems to have sent it, and verify that it’s real.
- Do this by generating a brand new email, or, if you have their phone number, call or text
- Do this before you click on anything or enter any information
- If it’s a scam, delete the message entirely and immediately
As a general rule, never enter sensitive information (email address, date of birth, passwords) into an e-vite reply. If you must, contact the sender personally to RSVP.
Questions? Let us know.
Authentically yours,
Beth+

Rector New Cell Phone
The Rector has added the following contact number:
(970) 409-7507
Although email, rector@stjohnsbreck.org, is always the preferred avenue of contact, by all means add this number to your rolodex for situations when talking or texting is just a better option. This cell will generally be powered off when the Rector isn’t on the clock, but she will monitor it periodically for emergencies.
The Rector may typically be reached:
- Tuesday-Saturday 9am - 5pm
- Sunday 8am - 1pm
She is off on Mondays, when she will neither send nor receive communications (but will check periodically for emergencies).

Contacting Vestry Members
The Vestry now has an email address, vestry@stjohnsbreck.org, which will be monitored by Senior Warden, Carol Goodwin.
