All Saints Day reminds us death is a part of life
|
|
Dear Friends,
As the days grow darker, the Church peers into the darkness throughout the world and looks at death itself. Unlike the rest of our culture, we believers are not afraid of death. We speak the names of those that we love who have died, and we even celebrate their lives. We understand that death is a part of life, and even our Lord Jesus died to show us the way to eternal life. It is through death that we live with God. Death is not to be feared. It is, as Jesus said, simply the passing of our souls from one room to the next.
The coming Sunday is called All Saints Sunday. We remember the people we love who have died and speak their names aloud in worship. On Sunday morning, we will invite you to write down your loved ones' names so that we can read them aloud as we receive communion. For in the eucharist itself, we believe that we are joined with all the communion of saints in heaven and on earth. We are all one Body in Christ.
Come and hear the names of your loved ones spoken aloud. Even though death is painful for those left behind, it is not the last word, and we don't need to be afraid. You will see them again. They will be waiting for you in the next room.
God bless you.
In Christ's love,
Kate+

Portraits and Personalities class will focus on the four Gospel writers for Christmas season
|
|
Following the successful course taught by Joe O’Shields and Linda Privitera this summer of “Poetry and Portraits of Personalities in Pentecost,” the Formation and Spirituality Council offers a course in (well, mostly in) Advent:
Personalities and Portraits: the Gospel writers prepare for Christmas
The class will meet on Zoom, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays, November 18 through December 16. There will be no class meeting on Thanksgiving, November 25.
November 18 Matthew
December 2 Mark
December 9 Luke
December 16 John
At each class, Linda and Joe will take a look at one Gospel writer to see how he approached and celebrates the Incarnation. The writers' different perspectives will offer an opportunity for us to reflect on our own patterns for embracing this season.

Advent procession with carols set for November 28
|
|
The Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols at St. John's Cathedral is a sequence of readings, hymns, and choral music exploring themes of Advent - darkness, light, despair, hope, and justice. As you listen, consider how these themes are reflected in the oldest stories and wisdom of the Bible, in the prophetic voice, and in the stories of John the Baptist and the birth of the Son of God.
During the service, the Cathedral Choir, Vergers, Readers, and Clergy process from the West to the East, from the darkness towards the direction of the sunrise, towards the land from which comes the awaited king.
Join us on the First Sunday of Advent
November 28
5 p.m.
Free and open to all!

Transition Committee Appointees
Beloved in Christ,
The Standing Committee was once again humbled to see the excitement around the Diocese for all that the Lord has in store for us through next year’s episcopal election.
We received many applications from talented clergy and laity, and we are grateful to God that there is so much willingness to serve. We extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to those who applied but were not appointed.
With gratitude and great expectation, we announce the names of those appointed to serve on the Transition Committee:
· Barbara Stevenson, St. Mark’s, Jacksonville – Co-Chair
· The Rev. Bob Goolsby, St. Thomas, Palm Coast – Co-Chair
· Hannah Bardin, Our Saviour, Jacksonville
· Deborah Brill, St. Luke’s, Jacksonville
· Martha Cox, St. John’s Cathedral, Jacksonville
· Glenn Guiler, St. John’s Cathedral, Jacksonville
· Amy Johnson, Holy Comforter, Tallahassee
· Heather Johnston, Redeemer, Jacksonville
· The Rev. Bob Marsh, St. Mark’s, Palatka
· The Rev. Sarah Minton, All Saints, Jacksonville
· Marilyn Peterson, Holy Trinity, Gainesville
· The Rev. Tom Reeder, Christ Church, Ponte Vedra
· Pam Stefansen, St. Andrew’s, Jacksonville
· The Rev. William Stokes, St. Mark’s, Jacksonville
· Jack Tull, Christ Church, Seranata Beach
· The Rev. Adam Young, Incarnation Chapel, Gainesville
This important committee will shepherd the final slate of nominees from their announcement in early March to the election in mid-May, with an emphasis on introducing the nominees to the Diocese, and the Diocese to the nominees. They will then care for those not elected and help our Bishop Coadjutor-Elect move towards consecration.
Please keep them in your regular prayers as their initial organizing work begins very soon.
In Christ Alone,
Your Standing Committee
