Dear Cathedral,
It is my joy to begin a new Dean's Forum this coming Sunday. I'll be talking about the subject of my next book, Find It: The Four Vital Signs of the Spiritual Life (Forward Movement Publications, January 2022).
In this age of technology, Americans are coming to believe that we can take charge of every aspect of our lives. We can manage our investments online, track our physical health and exercise, choose our music and entertainment, and determine which media and news to watch. But when it comes to our spiritual lives, how do we know how to take care of ourselves?
This course will help you understand the vital signs of the spiritual life and give you the tools you need to nurture your relationship with God. You will emerge from this class, God willing, with a better understanding of how to care for yourself spiritually and maintain health and balance, no matter what is occurring in your life and the world around you.
We will meet in Taliaferro Hall and on Zoom at 9 a.m. on Sundays. Masks are mandatory when meeting on campus. A small-group discussion will follow each presentation. Interim director of formation, Michael Corrigan, will coordinate break-out rooms on Zoom for these discussions. We are so thankful for the new technology in Taliaferro Hall that makes this possible! It's the result of your gifts and a matching grant from The Jesse Ball duPont Foundation.
You are the only one who can care for and develop your relationship with God. Find out how. Join me.
In Christ's love,
Kate+

Guest Preacher: The Very Rev. Kurt Dunkle
|
The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle will be the guest preacher for both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services this Sunday, Sept. 12.
Dunkle is the 13th Dean and President of the General Theological Seminary of The Episcopal Church. General Seminary is the original seminary of The Episcopal Church founded in 1817 and is also the oldest Seminary in the Anglican Communion.
During his eight-year tenure, he took the seminary from a multi-million dollar annual deficit to balanced and surplus budgets, reorganized the faculty, oversaw successful reaccreditation, developed two new degree programs (the first new degree programs in 25 years), and envisioned a new way to prepare seminarians for real-life service in their final year, The Wisdom Year. He retired earlier this year.

We Gather to Give video, part 2

Why Pledge?
A pledge is a commitment, made after deliberate and prayerful consideration, to contribute a specific amount of money to the parish community. It is a reflection of your gratitude for the abundant blessings God has given you.
Pledging to give on a regular basis enables the Vestry to make realistic budget projections for the coming calendar year. We hope that all households will make a stewardship pledge, even if it is only a small amount per week, as an expression of an ongoing commitment to St. John's Cathedral.
In summary, here are three reasons why pledges are key to the health of our Cathedral:
- Pledges are a way to include Cathedral members in the mission of St. John's Cathedral.
- Pledges help us plan and budget for the future.
- Pledges help to fund Cathedral operations.

Assistance needed in the wake of Hurricane Ida
|
On Sunday, August 29, sixteen years after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Ida made landfall in the same region. This Category 4 storm brought flooding and damaging winds that caused a loss of water to hundreds of thousands and a loss of electricity to over 1 million people. Episcopal Relief & Development is working closely with the Diocese of Louisiana and other regional partners in what will be a long-term response. Diocese of Florida Prayer for the Election of Our Bishop
Almighty God, giver of every good gift, we pray that you would look graciously upon the Diocese of Florida, and so guide the minds and hearts of the Nominating Committee as they prayerfully select candidates for the election of the next bishop of this diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries: Guide also the minds and hearts of the candidates who will come before the Nominating Committee, that this process will be a time of discernment and growth in their lives and ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
