Dear Saint Joseph Elementary School Parents,

Our Lenten season is fast approaching. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (March 6) and ends approximately 6 weeks later on Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is to prepare for the Resurrection of our Lord.

Our students will be hearing quite a bit about Lent in class and during our school activities. Many prepare during the Lenten season with prayer, fasting and penance. I would encourage you to talk to your children about the idea of "giving up" something for Lent. What if instead of giving something up, we decide to give back instead? Give your kindness, give your gifts and give your love.

Commit as a family to do activities with each other. Focus on the human relationships around you and spread your kindness and love with one another. Maybe a family decides to forego TV on a Friday night during Lent, and commits to a "Family Game Night." How about family meals without devices or screens for 40 days? Focus on what you are saying to each other. Focus on building human relationships. Imagine what could come from this.

Our students show this human compassion and love for one another. I see our students interact with each other, and my heart swells at how much love we have in our school. I thank you in advance for fostering this love in your homes. Consistency is our partnership. What happens at home, happens at school. What happens at school, will happen at home.

God's Blessing on Each of Us,

Dr. Marquita Yriarte
