Dear Parents of Saint Joseph Students,
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5
Two years ago, I received a call from Kathleen Radecke, Superintendent of Schools for the Oakland Diocese. “It is August and Saint Joseph Elementary School does not have a principal.” Would I do it? At that time, I had already embarked on my new career, retirement. But something within me said, “Yes.” I packed up and moved to Alameda thinking, I will take this position for one year.
After one year, something within me said, “It is not time to go yet. I still have work to do.” Consequently, I spoke with Father George and here I stayed. These years with this beautiful school and community continued to show me hope and faith everyday.
My 94 year old father graciously supported my decision to move to Alameda. Now at 96, he told me the other day, he is really glad I am coming home. It is time for me to go back to my previous career, retirement, and being a daughter down the street.
So many calls, so many different people calling. But, of one thing I am certain: in all of those calls it was one Spirit calling each time, masked by different voices. It was the Lord, guiding me down a path that I did not understand. But, I am so grateful my heart was open to saying YES! He led me to you.
Thank you Saint Joseph Elementary School for opening your lives, hearts and minds to me. Thank you for accepting me into a community that offers unconditional love. I was anxious for this new journey, but I was immediately comforted by you. Forever you are in my heart and in my memory.
A special line from the musical Wicked: “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”
God’s Blessing on Each of You,
Dr. Marquita Yriarte
