Principal Newsletter
Dear Saint Joseph Elementary School Parents,

They say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” but do you know what was?  El Rancho! Every year I am in awe of how our school yard is transformed from a plain blacktop into a full carnival.  As I have said, it is my favorite day of the year!

I would like to give a VERY big thank you to Mrs. Celia Orozco-Lopez for being our El Rancho Chairperson.  She makes it seem like an easy process, but it takes hours and hours to organize people, vendors, city permits and students.  I cannot thank you enough for your commitment to our students and to our school.

Of course every successful leader has amazing partners.  Thank you to our booth area chairs: Suzanne Holley and Jenny Jaber (Food), Kristy Gray (Adult Booths), and Joycie Shinzato (Children’s Booths.)  And, an unsung hero for sure, thank you to Mr. Brock Grunt. Mr. Grunt has organized the set up of the booths and grounds for well over 20 years. His younger children are graduating this year, but we hope he and his family will continue to come to El Rancho for many more years.  And finally a thank you to all of our parents and students who showed, once again, that Saint Joseph Elementary School truly stands out as an OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY!!!

God’s Blessing on Each of Us,

Dr. Marquita Yriarte

Message from a SJES Alum... Abigail Gonzalez
Are any of you middle schoolers looking for some community service hours or just an excuse to get out and support a great cause???

If the answer is yes, then save the date on  October 27, 2018  to participate in the  Lung Force Walk 2018  at Lake Merced in San Francisco. This is a walk hosted by the American Lung Association to raise awareness for lung cancer. It will be an event full of music, games, and opportunities to celebrate lung heroes and their families.

Volunteers are needed to help at the event in two shifts: 7:00am-11:00am and 11:00am-3:00pm. Volunteers need to register beforehand  here .

If you can't volunteer and you would like to walk, I am hosting a team and would love to have as many fellow walkers as possible. The walk occurs between 9:30 and 12. Those walking have to register as walkers and "Join a team." My team is named "Attacking Asthma."
Walkers need to register beforehand  here .
If you are interested in volunteering or walking for the cause, please get in touch with  Abigail  Gonzalez at  abigail@attackingasthma.org  or call

October- Month of the Holy Rosary
This Saturday, October 13th, we celebrate Our Lady's final apparition at Fatima. We will begin the celebration at the 5:00 pm Mass. Immediately following Mass, together we will process around the block to pray the Holy Rosary and sing Marian hymns. At the culmination of the procession, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Benediction and the Eucharistic Blessing.

We invite all our ministers and parishioners to join us in responding to Our Lady's call to pray the Rosary for peace in the world, justice for all and healing within the Church. Sister Lucia of Fatima reminds us that, "There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot solve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."

Also, we hold daily praying of the Holy Rosary from Monday to Friday, 7:30am and 7:00 pm in the Basilica; and Saturday and Sunday 20 minutes before all Masses.
Please share this invitation with your family, friends and ministry members. We need to pray, and we need to pray together. Your presence and cumulative prayers bond and strengthen our community.
Want your child to get more out of Mass? Get involved in the monthly Family Mass! Strong, confident readers can offer the welcome, proclaim the readings and lead the Prayers of the Faithful (maybe parent and child together!), families can serve as greeters handing out the worship aids before Mass, and we always welcome more children to sing in the Children's Choir . If your family is interested in helping with the November 4 Family Mass please contact SJES parent Kitchie Tanaka at  kitchie@gmail.com or Anne Marie at the Parish Office, at  afourre@sjbalameda.org.
