August 17, 2025

Dear Hill Families,

Lord God,

I give you all the members of our family. You know them all so well and love them all. I ask that you cover us with a rainbow of hope.

Hope that draws us together to work out our differences.

Hope that helps us to celebrate together and care for one another.

Hope that rides like a banner in our lives and watches over us wherever we go.

Hope that overcomes adversity and gathers strength to overcome.

Hope that guides us and gives us vision for our future alone and together.

Hope filled with love.

Hope that fuels faith.

Hope that breathes peace.

May our family live in you

Underneath your promises.

Amen

As we find ourselves in the middle of August, the back to school sales in stores are in full effect but the amount of Halloween merchandise being sold is a bit overwhelming in August. I love Halloween and all that comes with it…just not while I’m still wearing shorts and turning down the AC. Rushing through the seasons seems ridiculous to me, as we still have so many more warm and sunny days to enjoy through September. I’m not quite ready for night swims in the pool, burgers on the grill or ice cream from the truck to end.

Teacher and Staff Announcements

As Ms. Christina Mistretta has joined our Hill high school faculty, we are pleased to formally announce that Ms. SonnyLynn Balkan will be our new 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Science content area teacher. She has been meeting with Mr. Pablo to plan lessons and review materials. She will be working closely with Mr. Pablo, Ms. Maresca and Ms. McPolin is thrilled to join our faculty. All new faculty and staff will undergo PLTW Launch training on August 25th and 26th.

About Ms. SonnyLynn Balkan

My name is SonnyLynn Balkan, and I am a recent graduate from Syracuse University. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree with dual majors in Biology and Forensic Science, graduating Sum Cum Laude in May 2025. My background includes many different leadership and professional

roles, spanning from hands-on laboratory experience to counseling individuals with mental and physical disabilities. I am truly excited to further pursue my passion for science and my commitment to working with children through this new career opportunity. I hope my students can experience science not just as a subject, but as a way to better understand everyday life!

Class Placement:

Though we appreciate parental input on all matters, as qualified educators, teachers take into consideration a variety of factors when making all decisions for placement of students. Decisions regarding class placement for September are made by our teachers, in consultation with the administration, when necessary.

Children at all grade levels from PreK to 8 are re-grouped every year in order that they may form new friendships and learn to work together outside of their comfort zone to prepare them for their academic future and social interactions outside of the classroom setting.

Accommodations based on alumni status of parents, donor recognition, prior placement of siblings with specific teachers, or matters based on concerns/ rumors about teachers, will not be entertained. We kindly ask that you respect placement of all students and refrain from calling the main office or email administration and/or teachers to make changes, as we can not honor those requests.

Students will find out their classes on the first day of school and no adjustments will be made.

What to Wear FAQ:

School Uniforms: We will begin the school year wearing our Summer/Spring uniform. This includes the polo shirt, skort or dress shorts and all white sneakers. You will not need the full school winter/ fall dress uniform and school dress shoes until mid to late October. Please don’t rush to buy the full uniform.

Gym Uniforms: On gym days all students will be expected to wear their FULL gym uniforms and all white sneakers. From September through October students may wear their gym shorts and gym t-shirts to school on gym days. Hill wear and Hill athletic teams attire is NOT part of the gym uniform and students should NOT sub in these items. During cold weather months shorts and t-shirts can be worn under their Hill gym uniform sweats. Students should NOT be arriving at school in gym shorts or t-shirts in the winter and fall. (Christmas Carnival shirts can be worn in December and January on appointed day)

School Masses: On days we have a school mass students who have gym class may still wear their gym uniforms to school. Unless otherwise notified.

Cold Weather Hill Wear Days: On cold days we often give the option of gym uniforms and/ or Hill wear with Hill gym sweatpants or Hill wear pants sold in the school store. That is the only time when Hill wear is acceptable. On these days students will wear their all white gym sneakers. No short sleeve gym shirts are to be worn on cold weather Hillwear days. (gym uniforms must be worn on gym days). You will be notified in advance of Hillwear Days.

Dress Down Days: Throughout the year we have a variety of celebratory and/or paid fundraising dress down days. These are not mandatory. On such days proper attire is required. No ripped jeans, tank tops, cropped shirts, bare midriffs or sleeveless shirts. Shorts must be an appropriate length and should come slightly above the knee. This applies to all dresses and clothing worn to all school related functions and events. No sandals, flip flops, Crocks, slippers or slides are to be worn to school.

Nails, hair, jewelry, backpacks and outerwear: Students are not permitted to wear nail polish or have nail tips. Please consult the student handbook for information regarding hair and jewelry. If hair was dyed in the summer please cut it or return it to the natural color before returning to school.

Backpacks for students can be any color as is the same for jackets. Jackets, fleeces,  sweatshirts and/ or hillwear are not to be worn in the classroom.

School sweaters and or gym sweatshirts (on gym days) will be worn if students want a bit more warmth. Students should NOT be wearing coats in class.

The Hill polo shirt will no longer be worn in place of the gym t-shirt on gym days. This was practiced many years ago and we will no longer follow this practice.

Students who attend after school sports clubs or that have practice on campus right after school may wear their gym uniform or sports uniform (appropriately) on those days.

Immunizations: All immunization documents were due to the nurses' office before the beginning of August. If you have not done so, send in immediately, as we do not want to exclude children from school for non-compliance situations.

Please submit all medical forms to Nurse Claudia: cdebrosse@stjhill.org.

No student will be able to attend on the first day of school unless their immunization records are up to date.

Please do not delay in addressing this important matter. In accordance with New York State law and our school’s handbook, all students must be immunized in compliance with the most updated New York State Immunization Chart. We are required to exclude children from school in non-compliance situations.

We are strongly encouraging all families to visit their primary care provider or local health clinic as soon as possible to ensure they are up to date with their required immunizations and the school health form that is linked below.

These documents can also be found on our school website here.

Summer Work

All summer work has been posted prior to the end of the school year, and reading materials were given to students in June. Individual teachers and or content area teachers provided specific instructions and due dates. All summer work is posted online here Summer 2025 Work.

Please continue to check your child/children's work. Continuous checking will help to ensure that students keep up with Summer work at a gradual pace to avoid a stressful end of their Summer break.
