St. Joe’s Surgeons Perform Canada’s First Fully-Robotic Procedure for Esophageal Cancer
Robotic surgery
Dr. Waël Hanna and Dr. John Agzarian, two of our renowned Thoracic Surgeons, recently completed Canada’s first fully-robotic esophagectomy right here at our Hospital using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot! An esophagectomy is a procedure where the cancerous portion of a patient’s esophagus is removed and their stomach is pulled up to reattach to the esophagus. If it sounds like a major surgery, that’s because it is. Complications from a traditional surgery of this type were common upwards of 60 percent of the time, but with a new robotic approach, Dr. Hanna and his colleagues are improving outcomes and reducing length of stay in Hospital for those living with this deadly form of cancer. Read all about the procedure, how the patient is doing now, and how a gift made in memory of a young woman helped to make it all possible. This project was kickstarted by financial support from a donor. You can support innovative projects like this, through the St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation.

Patient Wishes in Dovetale
St. Joe's has updated the levels of medical interventions listed on Dovetale order sets to document patient wishes.

The changes help our healthcare workers customize interventions to better meet the care goals of our patients, particularly those with chronic conditions. The new levels also reflect best practices in palliative medicine, which have evolved over time. Having levels of medical intervention that focus on the patient's care goal rather than just on survival is unique, and St. Joe's is one of few hospitals in the country to adopt this approach.

  • Another level has been added: "No CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest. No ICI in the event of a life-threatening emergency. Palliative Medicine Interventions." This level is now second last on the list. The goal of care for this level is improving quality of life and/or comfort.
  • The last, and least aggressive level of medical intervention, has been recategorized as "No CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest. No ICI in the event of a life-threatening emergency. Care Focused on Comfort." The goal of care for this level is relief of suffering and optimizing comfort near the end of life.

HEATH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
There have been several changes in the Health Professionals Academic Placement Coordinator Office. After almost 11 years serving in the role of Academic Placement Coordinator for Health Professionals, Peggy Bosanac (pictured) retired on August 26, 2022. Zdravka Kuzmanovic - who has also been working in the role for the past year and will be replacing Peggy going forward - will be on maternity leave starting September 26. 2022. Due to this, we are welcoming Wendy Galloway to the interim role as Academic Placement Coordinator. Wendy is also a physiotherapist at St. Joseph’s who is looking forward to assisting in onboarding and managing health professional learner experiences.

November 1, 2022 we will be hosting the Professional Advisory Committee Excellence in Practice Awards. These awards are open to individuals and teams of health professionals. While these awards recognize all the pillars of professional practice, there is an individual and a team award for education. The nominations are open from September 12th to October 7th and can be found on the external website and MyStJoes intranet site under the Professional Advisory Committee page.
Healthcare Apps and Podcasts
Did you know there are apps for several often-used medical resources such as DynaMed, EPIC Haiku and Micromedex, that you can download and use while at St. Joe’s? There are some which provide broad medical reference (DynaMed, BMJ Best Practice, Access Medicine), drug information (Micromedex, Epocrates) or handy tools (MDCalc, CanopySpeak). We’ve compiled a table listing them, with links to download. Please contact Library Services if you would like any assistance or further information.
There are a staggering number of medical-related podcasts available - everything from stories of patient experience, journal clubs, healthcare economics to nursing and medical specialties. Library Services has compiled a list of some of the most popular. Not sure what a podcast is or how to get started listening? Check out our guide to podcasts.

Shout-outs to Amazing Educators
Royalty free megaphone
Learners’ feedback of their experience at St. Joe’s gives them the opportunity to recognize exceptional SJHH supervisors and staff. Here’s what some of our recent learners have said…

Jenny Wheaton consistently provided feedback. After completing a new skill, Jenny would give feedback on how it went. Similarly, Jenny would ask me how I thought things went to encourage me to do some self-reflection. Jenny was an amazing preceptor who really helped me gain confidence in my skills. Jenny made me feel so welcome and a part of the team!”

“I have had three placements in total over my educational career and I have never encountered a supervisor as dedicated to my success as Patti Hardwick. She went above and beyond to expose to me to as many opportunities as possible in our short time together, and pushed me to become a better social worker. At the same time, she never lost sight of the fact that I was a student and provided frequent check-ins to ensure that I was managing the workload well and utilizing self-care as needed. I will be forever grateful for my experience at St Joseph's and for Patti's dedication to my learning and success.”

“Though Sara Dishart was my primary supervisor, both Sara and Maryem Sidarous were absolutely amazing supervisors. They were so welcoming right from the start, willing to involve me in anything they did that they thought might be helpful for my learning. They trusted me with tasks large enough to teach me valuable skills, while never leaving me without help or supervision. They were compassionate, encouraging, knowledgeable, professional, proactive, and welcoming, both with me and with clients! I learned just as much from the example that they set as I did from the words of their teaching.

Thank you, Educators, for all you do to make our Learners’ experiences top-notch and memorable! If you’re a Learner at SJHH, watch out for the survey which will be sent to you after your placement, where you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on your supervisor.
