Class of 1966 baseball team reunites for nostalgic evening

When Tom Beggs '66 happened to run into his baseball coach Mike Mathiesen at lunch one day, the two agreed - in an enthusiastic burst of nostalgia - that it would be a great idea to gather the team together for a reunion.

Subsequently, Coach and his wife Vicky hosted a wonderful evening for the team at their beautiful home on May 25. The evening included a sumptuous spread of hors d'oeuvres and a full bar catered by Pardini’s. In attendance were: (standing) John Behrens, Rich Aguirre, Fred Medrano, Jim Fotes, Mike Boele, and Rick Graham; (sitting) Coach Mike Mathiesen, Tim Smith, Tom Beggs, John Sullivan, and Tim Woodward, as well as many of their wives. “By the end of the evening, we were a much better team than I remembered,” chuckled Rick Graham. “Also, there was that 20 run loss to Roosevelt that we rationalized away!”

Special kudos to Coach JD Salles for providing SJM baseball jerseys to wear at the party.

Special Note: Two teammates are deceased (Hodge and Lowe); and three others (Crosetti, Howell, Ramsey) were unable to attend.
SJM alumnus, Larry Pollastrini, 64’ and his 1956 Black and White Chevy Bel Air were out at the OLPH Carnival car show sporting a Memorial sticker in the back window.

Thanks Larry for showing your SJM pride!

SJM hosts charitable gifting seminar

In October, SJM alumnus and financial advisor, Taylor Whelan ’04 of Whelan Financial, and attorney Kim Herold of McCormick Barstow, led a presentation on how charitable gifting can benefit your family.

The presentation’s over arching message is that charitable giving is not just about minimizing taxes (although there are significant tax benefits to encourage charitable giving), but it is about making a difference in your community.

There are many options when it comes to making the decision to have a charitable gift plan. Questions that have to be answered include what are your values and financial goals? Once those are identified, there are many strategies to minimize taxes while passing on wealth to your heirs and to charity.

If you have questions or would like to learn more about making a charitable gift plan, contact the Office of Advancement at (559) 475-5832 or advancement@sjmhs.org.

Giving Tuesday - 100 Donors in 24 hours!

San Joaquin Memorial to Participate in Giving Tuesday 2019 on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.

You have probably heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, maybe even Small Business Saturday, but what about Giving Tuesday?

Founded in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving to kick off the giving season. It falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. For 24 hours communities, charities, businesses, and individuals come together to support meaningful causes.

San Joaquin Memorial is proud of being the only school in Fresno that is able to shape the next generation of community leaders with La Sallian values at its core. We ask for our alumni and friends to come together to support us on this global day of giving by helping us reach our goal of 100 donors in 24 hours!

If you have an interest in helping SJM reach its goal on December 3, please contact the Office of Advancement at (559) 475-5832 or advancement@sjmhs.org.

Alumni Scholarship Fund Created

San Joaquin Memorial alumni have the storied reputation of being generous givers. When asked to show their support for various endeavors, Memorial graduates rise to the occasion.

With that said, the Advancement Office has created a new SJM Alumni Scholarship Fund that will benefit current students who need financial assistance in order to continue their high school experience at Memorial.

As an alumnus, you know that your scholarship donation will make a lasting impact on the lives of Memorial students. So, once again, we are asking our alumni to rise to the occasion and donate to the newly created Alumni Scholarship Fund by contacting Kenyeih Williams at kwilliams@sjmhs.org or (559) 475-5841.
