Where did the time go?  Just seven weeks ago, the first members of the 128th Corps of Cadets arrived.  Sixty-one Old Boys returned and stepped into new leadership roles. Forty-one very anxious New Boys entered into a challenge like none they had ever experienced.  What a job they have done.

The Corps' leadership continue to impress at every turn and have built a camaraderie that can be felt around campus.  The New Boys assimilated as well as any that preceded them and have added greatly to a wonderful start to the year.  Now comes Parents Weekend and the gathering of the St. John's family.  We look forward to your arrival and a chance to celebrate all that the cadets have accomplished thus far.

Muleskinner Golf Tournament
This year's Muleskinner Golf Tournament was one of the most successful in recent history.

Eighty golfers came out for a wonderful day of golf and fellowship. To date, the tournament and Muleskinner Campaign raised nearly $60,000, which will be used to support scholarships.

We are extremely appreciative of the support this campaign has received from the citizens of Salina, Salina businesses and St. John's supporters around the world.  Every dollar helps a young man, so if you would like to become a part of the Muleskinners, please contact us.

The SJMS Cadets were very visible during the tournament, helping with golf bags, assisting golfers to their carts, and providing the Star Spangled Banner at the start of the day.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the tournament.  See you next year!

English as a Second Language

It's not easy understanding the customs of a foreign country or understanding the language; however, Mrs. Michelle Lilly assists daily with our Chinese and Mexican Cadets in the English as a Second Language program.

Currently, the class is reading and learning about prairie life.  They plan to take a trip to Plumlee Buffalo Ranch. Where they will have a ranch tour and visit Old Town in Abilene. Several more area cultural trips are planned.

Little ones from Martin Luther Day Care love story time with cadets.  Each week, books are read to the children and the interaction is priceless.

High School Soccer

This weekend our team participated in a soccer tournament.  I am glad to announce that they represented us well, earning first place of their seed of six C teams!

It all started Friday night when we versed Classical School of Wichita.  A real test for our boys because we could not let go of another opportunity for our first win.  They scored first but we tied via Hinze. Then we pulled ahead when Ebert scored assisted by Lavoignet. They came back and tied up to end the half.

In the second half, a balanced game gave both teams scoring opportunities but B. Whitting in keeper saved us while their keeper did the same for them.  We kept going, and it paid off two minutes before the end when Ebert received the pass from Yoder and put it in the top corner for the win!

Then we first faced Wichita Southeast and took another win with a 4-1 score.  Yoder scored twice assisted by S. Udofia one time and by Turner the other time.  Ebert scored the other two assisted by Hajj one time and Yoder on his other goal.

We played the championship game against Campus High.  The duo Ebert-Yoder took it to them to get us an early score. Ebert scored again assisted by Hajj.  Blase and his defensive line with Turner, Liu, Pappas, Pan and Ryser shut down their offense keeping their numbers at zero.

Our boys represented well by playing good soccer.  Now they know what winning is like.  Moreover, they know how it feels to see their work pay off with a first place medal on their chests.  Coach Rivera and myself can't express how proud we are of those boys.

Thank you so much for the unconditional support. And please congratulate our boys.  They have earned it.

Coaches Rivera and Alvarado

The SJMS football team has continued to work hard throughout the whole season.

Success has been seen both as a team and also in the personal areas of each player. We are proud to say that offensively SJMS football is leading in passing and receiving.  The team is looking forward to Parents Weekend, to show the talents on the team for this year.  Our current record is 1-3, but does not reflect averaging 40 points a game, and the improvement this year.

Coaches thank everyone for the support and see you on Parents Weekend.

Middle School Soccer

These boys have been doing an outstanding job this season. They've been playing with enthusiasm as well as representing the school with respect and good sportsmanship. Their efforts are evident in our undefeated record. I'm incredibly proud of what they have accomplished thus far.

Cross Country

The middle school cross country runners participated in a local meet this week.
Our  boys ran well at the Salina Invitational, September 29.   Gavin Studebaker ran a  8:56 mile.  The 8th graders, Winters and Tyson, had a slow start, but came on strong in the last half mile of their race.  Winters placed 23rd with a time of  10:30 (1.5-mile), while Tyson came in 24th, running a  10:33 in a field of almost 60 runners.

Our last meet for the middle school will be at Chapman on  Thursday, 8 October.

Parents Weekend

Upon arrival to campus, please register with Mrs. McCoy, school secretary.  She will have your cadet's academic schedule, campus map, and other items of interest.   We will then have your cadet meet you in the library, where refreshments will be served.

A signup sheet will be available outside the teachers room to secure your meeting time.

During Parents Weekend, we will honor all our fall sports seniors and their parents during halftime of the home football game, Friday night, Oct. 9th.
Book Fair

The Scholastic Fall Book Fair will be  October 7,  2015. All students will have the opportunity to attend the Book Fair and purchase books during their English class. We do not display games, posters, toys, food items, etc. - just books. Each student will be allowed $30 to spend at the Book Fair. The cost of the books that he selects will be charged to your Business Office account.

Cadets seem to enjoy the opportunity to have books for their own reading. SJMS receives credit from Scholastic that we may "spend" using Scholastic resources to add books or other items for the school. We have purchased classroom sets of books, books for the library, educational games and some reference books for classroom use with our Scholastic Dollars.

If you do not want the Book Fair charge billed to your account, please send Brenda McCoy an e-mail at, by Tuesday October 6, 2015, stating that you wish to "opt out" of the Book Fair charges. If you sent a message for a previous Book Fair, please send a new message for this Book Fair so that I have a current record. Those students who will not be able to charge books will be contacted and informed that they must spend their own money if they wish to purchase books.

Kind regards,
