Message From The Principal
Dear St. Jerome Family,
May God bless you with peace and joy as we celebrate Jesus' birth. May the spirit of Christmas be with you throughout the new year. The faculty and staff of SJRS extend wishes to you and your families for a holy, healthy and Happy New Year and we pray for God’s blessings in 2019.
Christian of the Month
 
The Christian of the Month Award recognizes students who display good character on a consistent basis and serve as student role models throughout the month. Students are nominated by their teachers based on the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Students chosen to receive this award will be acknowledged for their accomplishment in the monthly newsletter. Listed below are the students that have been chosen as Christian of the Month for December in each homeroom. 
Students will receive a dress down pass, Christian of the Month Certificate and an Applebees Certificate.
T he students will be recognized at the first Mass of each month.

Stella Thompson has been chosen Christian of the Month for Kindergarten Blue. Stella always comes into school with a friendly smile and a cheerful attitude. She enjoys participating in all class activities, is always paying attention and trying to do her best. Stella is very respectful and helpful to her teachers and her classmates. At home, Stella loves to color and ride her bike and motorcycle. She is involved with Tamaqua Area Youth Soccer and participates in Gymnastics at Tumble with Denise. Congratulations Stella!

The student of the month for Kindergarten Gold is Vitaliy Chepelskyy . Vitaliy is an attentive, diligent and generous student. He is very neat and is a hard worker. Vitaliy is in his second year in Karate and has earned a yellow belt. He also plays soccer. He belongs to St. John the Byzantine Catholic church in Lansford. He is very helpful with social projects at his parish. He loves outdoor activities such as going hiking, and biking. He is also very compassionate. Congratulations!

Peyton O’Brien , Grade 1, has earned the Christian of the Month Award. Peyton is a very responsible and conscientious student. Peyton always follows directions and is always ready for class. She gets along well with her classmates. Peyton has participated for four years with Faberge Follies in Hazleton. Peyton demonstrates significant amounts of respect towards others and a strong caring attitude towards everyone she encounters. Great job, Peyton!!!!!

Nina Thorpe is Second Grade Blue's Christian of the Month. Nina is respectful, kind and helpful to her classmates, and puts a lot of effort into her daily classwork. Nina belongs to the Anthracite Volleyball Club for 2 years and St. Jerome CYO Cross Country for 1 year. She is a member of Brownie Troop #6741-6743 for two years. Nina has been taking piano lessons for a year and is a member of St. Joseph's Children's Choir for 2 years. She loves baking and helping in the kitchen. When she is older, she would like to be a baker. Her favorite places to travel are the Outer Banks and Disney. She is a great big sister to her two brothers, Grady and Neri. Nina loves cats, her Christmas elves Trixie, Jacob and Buddy. She also loves to play with her friends.

2-Gold’s Christian of the Month for December is Levi McCullion . At home, Levi loves his dog Dutchess, enjoys crafting, collecting nutcrackers, building Legos, and going to the beach and Disney World with his family. Levi loves being outdoors, helping with yard work, riding his four-wheeler, doing stunts on the trampoline, nature walks in the woods, and roller blading. He is also an avid train collector, and has a Lionel Train display that he loves showing to his family and friends when they visit. He enjoys going to train meets to see what kind of trains/display, he can find to add to his collection. He loves playing soccer and is looking forward to becoming an altar server at church. Levi comes across as shy until he knows you. He has recently started horseback riding and enjoys that as well. Levi is always kind and caring to all his family and friends, and in class he is respectful, helpful, and always has a smile on his face! Congratulations Levi!

Third grade Christian of the Month is awarded to Carter Eschbach . Carter is a caring and responsible student. He is a great help in the classroom and to his friends. He enjoys drawing and playing video games. Congratulations Carter!

The December Christian of the Month in 4th grade is Kaitlyn Purin . When in school, Kaitlyn enthusiastically adds to class discussions and is eager to volunteer to go to the board. She also enjoys writing in her journal and sharing what she writes. Kaitlyn is kind to everyone and is eager to help whenever it is needed. She is respectful to her classmates, teacher, and any other adult she may encounter during the school day. Kaitlyn has taken dance for the past seven years at The Dance Factory in Tamaqua. She has tried every type of dance class offered and is currently taking ballet and gymnastics. She is also in “The Sunshine Girls” which is a specialty group. Kaitlyn also takes a summer gymnastics class at “Tumble with Denise”. She is an altar server at St. John XXIII parish in Tamaqua. Kaitlyn spends her weekends in the winter skiing at Blue Mountain. One of her favorite slopes is a double black diamond, Razors Edge. She loves spending time with her grandmother and great grandmother. Kaitlyn is a very loving big sister to her little brother, James.

Kaitlyn Kisenwether is Fifth Grade's Christian of the month. She is very helpful in class, both with her teacher and her classmates. She is compassionate towards others and a very ambitious student. Her after school activities include swimming for the Tamaqua Blue Waves and playing volleyball with the Anthracite Volleyball Club. She has been playing piano for 3 years and is a member of the children's choir with St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley. Kaitlyn is a wonderful big sister to Kylie in second grade. Congratulations Kaitlyn!

Owen Rakos has been chosen as Christian of the Month for December. Owen is considerate, attentive, and cooperative during class. He is kind toward his classmates and is always willing to help others. Owen placed first in the CYO District 5 Spelling Bee for Sixth Grade. He is an altar server for Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Lehighton. Owen has earned numerous badges for Boy Scouts. Congratulations Owen!

Dylan Newton is the 7th Grade Christian of the Month. He is always polite and courteous to everyone he meets. Dylan is an altar server at St. Joseph of the Panther Valley where he attends Youth Ministry and also helps at the summer festival. He readily volunteers to serve at school Masses. Outside of school, Dylan has played Lil Colts Arena Football as center and right end. For 8 years, he has played third base for Anthracite Little League. Dylan enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He loves sports, playing and watching, especially the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. Congratulations, Dylan!

Joseph Walko has been chosen as the 8th Grade Christian of the Month. Joseph displays a cheerful attitude and possesses leadership skills. As President of the SJRS Student Council, Joseph enthusiastically helps to plan and organize fun events for the student body. He also reads the school's morning announcements over the intercom system. Joseph belongs to the following sports teams: Hazle Township Raider's Football, St. Jerome CYO Basketball, and Weatherly Babe Ruth Baseball. He is an altar server for All Saints Parish and he helps with Tri- County Sports practices and games. He also enjoys hunting and fishing. Congratulations Joseph!
Some of the highlights during the month of December are listed below:
 
-HSA sponsored an Ugly Sweater Themed Dance for students in grades 5th-8th on December 7th. Everyone had a great time!

- The students enjoyed shopping for their families at the Santa's Secret Shop. Thank you to the HSA for coordinating this! Thank you also to all of the volunteers who helped make this event special! All students were permitted to dress down in Christmas clothes on both days of Santa's Shop.

-Student Council also sponsored a  Christmas Bulletin Board Decorating Contest.  Students from Kindergarten through eighth grade participated in this fun-filled event and all grades did an outstanding job! Winners of the contest were: 
1st Place: Grade 3
2nd Place: Grade 8
3rd Place was a tie: Grade 7 and 2-Blue
Honorable Mention: KGold
Winning grades will have a dress down day on Thursday, December 20th. Congrats and great job to everyone! Please see the school Facebook page for pictures!

-Santa made a visit to each classroom on December 10th. He returned on the 11th to take a few pictures with PSP.

-Our PreK Christmas Show was held on December 12th and it was a beautiful show! Thank you to all of the families who came to watch our little performers!


-All of the students in grades K-8 participated in the Christmas Program entitled "The Promise of Light”. It was a beautiful show! Thank you to Mr. Cressley, Mrs. Confer and Mrs. Dakosty for organizing this event. Thank you to the faculty and staff for helping to make this a success! 
 
- We held our HSA 50/50 Drawing on December 19th. Congratulations to the winner George Mitzen . The total was $ 1,790.

·T hank you so much to everyone for their generous donations during the month of December! Our mission projects for the month of December supported our local community. Students in grades Kindergarten through 4 brought in items for the “Birth Rite” Tree sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Students in Grades 5-8 participated in the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program. May God bless you for your generosity during this Christmas Season. The Dress Down Day that was held on December 6th was also very helpful for a family in need of some extra help at this time.

We are happy to announce that yesterday we reached well over our $5,000 goal! Because of donors like you, who love and support St. Jerome Regional School, we raised over $13,000!!! From everyone here at SJRS, especially our students, we send are sincerest gratitude.

Poster Contest

Alex Porambo 's entry in the McAdoo Lions Club Peace Poster Contest has won first place at the Lions District 14-U level. His poster will move on to compete at the state competition. In the spring, Alex and his family will be invited to attend a luncheon at the District 14-U Convention where he will be recognized for his work. Congratulations Alex!

ECP Tutoring Program

ST. JEROME REGIONAL SCHOOL EXTENDED CARE PROGRAM (ECP) is partnering with Marian Catholic High School in order to offer our ECP students the option of participating in the Lil Colts and Fillies Tutoring Program. Students from Marian Catholic High School will be tutoring students in various subjects on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the afternoon ECP sessions. Our ECP staff will supervise the tutoring sessions that will take place in the ECP room. If your child attends afternoon sessions of ECP and you would like to sign them up to participate in the program, please request a permission slip at ECP. This program will start in January.

Re-Registration began October 10th. Information and forms were sent home in the communication envelopes, and they can also be found at this link HERE The following discounts will be offered to our current families only:


Enroll by February 1 st (End of CSW): $75.00 per child
Enroll after February 1 st : $100.00 per child 

Registration Fees must be paid in order to officially register for the 2019-2020 school year.

Gift Certificates and Scrip Certificates
These are great ways to help with tuition costs. If you have any questions please call the office. Many people are saving hundreds of dollars in tuition by purchasing certificates. Certificates are sold from the school office daily during school hours and scrip orders are taken on Tuesdays. Orders will resume on January 8th.

Tuition Chance
This year we will again sell tuition chances to help you win money toward your tuition bill. The chances are $1 each, and paper slips are in the family envelope. If you want to purchase the chance, fill out the slip and enclose money in an envelope marked tuition chance. This is not a fundraiser. All money collected will be awarded to the winning student’s tuition account. If your tuition is fully paid, credit will be applied to next year’s bill. 
 
The winner for  December is Jakob Buzinski in 3rd Grade . The amount of tuition credit is $125 . Thank you to all who took chances. Slips are enclosed for next month’s drawing which will be on January 28th.

Preschool news
December was a very fun and busy month. Thank you to all who helped us with our 4-year-old Christmas play and 3-year-old Christmas fun day. The students had so much fun. Thank you to all of the families who came to the programs!

4 year olds
During the Month of January, we will continue to work on letter identification, focusing on matching upper case and lower case letters. We will also introduce syllables. In math, we will work on sorting, patterns and introducing how to write numbers 0 - 9. During religion we will learn to pray the Our Father, discuss being a part of the church family and respect for ourselves and others.

3 year olds
What we are learning:
Letters of the Week include N, O, P & Q. We will continue our counting practice. They will be introduced to identifying and writing their names. In Religion class, we will introduce the Our Father and continue to learn about prayers.

· Christmas vacation – December 24th- January 1st. School reopens January 2nd.

-January Missions- Many thanks for your donations for the Birth Rite Tree and Toys for Tots. Once again our school community has demonstrated a genuine spirit of generosity.
During the month of January we will be selling snowflakes for a donation of 50 cents. The money collected will go to the St. Vincent DePaul Society to aid families in need. The snowflakes will be displayed throughout the school.

-Reminder- As stated in the Handbook on page 33. All visitors must report to the school office to sign in and receive a Visitor badge before going anywhere in the school building and then sign out before leaving. Visits to the classroom are not permitted during school hours unless previous arrangements have been made with the teacher or through the school office.
Catholic Schools Week 2019

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2019 is “Learn. Serve. Lead, Succeed.” CSW will be celebrated beginning January 27th. 
This is a special time to celebrate in our Catholic Schools. Special events are planned for this week. Information will be sent home on these events throughout the month and also check it out on the school facebook page.  Here is the tentative schedule of events. A CSW flyer will be coming home in the new year. There will be no special subjects this week due to the change of schedule and special activities that are planned.

Sunday, January 27th
  • 11:00AM-1:00PM- SJRS Open House for current families, new families and former families. (Tour the school, visit classrooms, STEM lab, art room, music room and gymnasium. View student work and projects. Registration for PreK through Grade 7.
  • HSA Soup sale and bake sale

Monday, January 28th
  • CSW School Liturgy 9:30AM (Wear Dress Uniforms)
  • Get up and Dance Activities will take place in the afternoon

Tuesday, January 29th
  • Mix-Match Day or Twin Day (dress up in mix match clothes or you and a friend can dress like twins)

Wednesday, January 30th
  • Cozy Day (Wear your warm pajamas or cozy clothes to school. Students will be watching movies)

Thursday, January 31st
  • Spirit Day (Wear SJRS Spirit Wear or School Color Clothing) Marian Catholic High School Students and Staff will be here for a Pep Rally.
  • Step-Up Day Activities will take place in the morning. Students will Step-Up to the next grade level for an hour. They will meet the teacher in that grade level and do a project in the class.

Friday, February 1st
  • Sports Day/Board Games (Students can wear sports jerseys or favorite team clothing. (No electronics)

Almighty Father, You sent forth your Son, Jesus, as a beacon of hope for all people.
As Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance of education.
As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and strength.
Thank you for the many men and women who have dedicated their lives in service to our Catholic schools.
Thank you for the teachers and administrators who lead our schools today.
Thank you for the parents who have given support and witness to the importance of Catholic education in their daily lives.
