Saint Jerome Regional School
"Living Fearlessly Through Faith..."
Message From The Principal
Dear St. Jerome Family,
The 2019- 2020 school year is off to a great start! It seems like the students have adjusted very quickly.    Thank you for your continued prayers, support and dedication to SJRS. Some of the highlights during the months of August and September are listed below:
  • We had a great turn out at our Meet The Teacher Event. Special thanks to our Home and School Officers and parent volunteers for helping.

  • Thank you to Father Hoffa for blessing each of our homerooms on the first day of school.

  • The Scholastic Book Fair was a big hit with the students! Students in grades K-8 all had a chance to shop. Thank you for supporting our school. There will be another book fair in the Spring. We will send the details home before the next event.

  • We hosted a Protecting God's Children Class for over fifty members of our community on September 10th. Remember, if you want to be a volunteer, you will have to complete this one time class. Classes are offered at many locations throughout the year. Please click this link https://www.allentowndiocese.org/
and scroll to the bottom to see the classes that are offered.

  • SJRS students were joined by our families, parishioners and friends as we prayed at our opening Mass. It was a beautiful celebration. Special thanks to Father Hoffa, Father Tolentino, Father Zelonis, Monsignor Baker, Ms. Bachert, Mr. Degler, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Confer for preparing the prayerful time for us.

  • Special Subject classes have started! The students are enjoying Music, Art, Physical Education and Computer/STEM Classes.

  • We began conducting emergency drills in all grades.

  • Thank you to Officer Mike Weaver and the Rush Township Police Department for visiting SJRS the morning of September 16th to hand out Travel Safely cards to our families.

  • MacKenna Jacobs and Julia Meiss will be our school's news correspondents for the Standard Speaker Newspaper. School news is published every week under "School Times. Please be sure to watch for it!

  • Student Council week (Sept 23rd-27th) is off to a great start for grades 5,6,7 and 8
  • Monday 9/23: candidates' posters were displayed
  • Tuesday 9/24: posters were viewed
  • Wednesday 9/25: candidates gave speeches
  • Thursday 9/26: Is a School Spirit Dress Down Day (Wear your school colors, spirit wear, gym clothes, CYO uniforms) and it is election day.
  •  Friday 9/27: Student Council installation: Mass at 9:30 AM and The Feast of Saint Jerome.

  • Thursday, September 26th is also the Fall Science Day Event at SJRS. We are all looking forward to this special day! Thank you to Dr. Joanne Calabrese and St. Luke’s for sponsoring this event. The Da Vinci Center (Use Your Brain Science Celebration) program will take place in the gym. They will have a total of 5 stations set up that day. Students will rotate through all of the stations so that they have an opportunity to see every station in the gym. Here is a quick overview of the Da Vinci Stations:
  • Mega Brain -Discover how your brain works from the inside out with the world’s only portable, inflatable, walk-through brain exhibit. Kids will learn about stroke, addiction, and other common brain conditions; how to keep your brain healthy; and the latest medical treatments for brain trauma and disease.
  • Comparative Brains-After walking through the brain visitors will have the opportunity to view an array of different animal brains. They can compare the different sizes and shapes to a real human brain and will even have the chance to feel a real sheep brain!
  • Sight Station-At this Station kids will explore how we see and get a chance to learn and identify the different parts of the eye. Kids will also have a chance to test out some of the functions of their own eyes in some hands-on activities.
  • Sound & Smell Station-Test your senses at this exciting station and use your nose to correctly identify our mystery scents. If that was too easy for you, test out how well you can identify the objects from the sounds they make!
  • Touch Station-Using our sense of touch we are able to feel lots of different textures and temperatures but how does it all work? Learn about the different receptors that allow us to feel the world around us and try to complete a maze with only your sense of touch!
  • St. Luke’s will have three stations that will also take place in the gym. (Robotic Arm, Stroke Management and Brain Caps). We are also expecting Dr. Ackerman, a Neurologist from St. Luke’s to be here to talk to the kids that day. Be sure to check out our SJRS Facebook page on the 26th for photos of all the fun learning experiences!
Parents and Guardians, please be sure to look over the save the date flyers that are in the newsletter about Re-Registration and the Christmas Program this year.

Please Help Saint Jerome Regional School Keep Tuition Cost Affordable
Throughout the year you will be receiving information about the various fundraisers through the school and the Home and School Association. The reason we have fundraisers is to keep tuition costs down. The actual cost of education of each child in our school is over $5000.00. As you know, tuition is much less than this. The fundraisers help us make Catholic Education available to more children.
We do not have mandatory fundraising at Saint Jerome Regional School because it is our hope that every family will do everything possible to support our efforts, not because they must, but because they want to participate and because they care about the future of this school. Thanks for joining the effort for the sake of our children!

Gift Certificates and Scrip Certificates
These are great ways to help with tuition costs. Information is enclosed in the family envelope. If you have any questions please call the office. Many people are saving hundreds of dollars in tuition by purchasing certificates. Certificates are sold from the school office daily during school hours and scrip orders are taken on Tuesdays.

Tuition Chance
This year we will again sell tuition chances to help you win money toward your tuition bill. The chances are $1 each, and paper slips are in the family envelope. If you want to purchase the chance, fill out the slip and enclose money in an envelope marked tuition chance. This is not a fundraiser. All money collected will be awarded to the winning student’s tuition account. If your tuition is fully paid, credit will be applied to next year’s bill.

The winner for September is  Jaxyn Gryzik in Kindergarten  . The amount of tuition credit is  $194  . T hank you to all who took chances. Slips are enclosed for next month’s drawing which will be on   October 21st. .

Arrival in the Morning
A reminder for bus drivers and parents/guardians: Unless you are dropping a child or children off for ECP, students are not permitted in the building before 7:45 am.

Extended Care Program
We will continue the Extended Care Program (ECP) at SJRS this school year. The hours will be 7- 8 AM. and 2:45-3:45 PM. Please see the website for forms and more information on ECP.

Supplies Needed
Every year we receive paper donated by various companies or organizations. If you know of anyone who would like to donate computer paper, copier paper, poster board or any other paper products, please call the office. Any donation is truly appreciated. We also use Clorox wipes in the gym and classrooms to disinfect areas and large green/black trash bags daily. If you can donate any of these products or know of a company who would donate these products, it would be greatly appreciated.

Save, Save, Save
This year we will continue to save the following items:
Box tops for education – General Mills products
Box tops now have an app. All you have to do is download the app on your phone, register with Saint Jerome Regional School and then “scan” your receipt. You no longer have to cut them off the boxes. Thank you.
Redner receipts – ( must say Save – A – Tape )
Turkey Hill milk caps
Coke Rewards-Pull Tabs from cans
Saving these items helps us to obtain educational materials or cash- back for our school. Just send any of the items to school with your child.

School Spirit Dress Down Days
Students are permitted to wear school colors (navy blue, cardinal or gold) on days that are designated as School Spirit Dress Down Days. Other items that are permitted are: CYO uniforms, school spirit wear, gym clothing or CYO spirit wear.

Dress Down Days
Students are permitted to wear clothing of their choice that is considered appropriate. They do not have to be school colors. Dress Down Day Passes are not permitted to be used on Dress Uniform Days.

Red Ribbon Week
The week of October 21st is Red Ribbon Week. Students will receive ribbons and badges.  Informative posters will be displayed to help spread the news of the danger of drugs. The theme is  " Send a Message. Stay Drug Free!"

Absences
Please call us if your child is going to be absent/tardy from school. This will ensure that we know where he/she is and that nothing has happened to him/her on the way to school. If your child is going to be absent or arrive late at school, you are required to call the school by 8:00 AM. Please leave a message if necessary. The number to call to report absences or lateness is 570-668-2757. Your call to let us know your child is not going to be in school does not take the place of an excuse note.  PA State requirements and those of the Diocese of Allentown require that for the student’s return to school, the student must be accompanied by a written note stating the particular reason for the absence and the specific date(s) of the absence(s). This note must be signed by the parent/guardian which will become an official document to be placed into the attendance files. A written excuse must be returned within three days to the student’s homeroom teacher when the child returns to school. Note: If an absentee note is not received after three days of absence, the student is considered unexcused and truant. For absences of three or more days, a formal written doctor’s excuse is required.  If a student enters school after 10:30 AM or is excused before 1:30 PM, he/she will be considered present for a ½ day only. If your child’s name appears on an attendance report from the homeroom teacher and you have not phoned to inform the school, please expect a call from the school personnel to verify the absence or check on your child’s whereabouts. Your child’s safety and welfare are of prime importance to us.
