Bernie's Bark
10.16.2018
Dear Parents-

Students are working hard to model the behaviors listed on the St. Joe’s Six, and teachers are looking for occasions to reward students for exemplary behavior that represents the best of the best. The Six Slip has become highly prized in the school community. This week we were able to recognize Abigail J. for her commitment to her character development . Abby was recognized on the school news this morning and her picture will be displayed in the hall. Congratulations to Abby and all students who earned Six Slips!

Congratulations to the 40 student athletes who represented Saint Joseph's parish in in the Arlington Diocese Fall 2018  Track & Field Championship  on Saturday, September 29. The event included 13 parishes and 650 participants competing in over 100 events. There were individual and relay races on the track in addition to long-jump, softball throw, javelin, and shot put events in the field.

Our athletes performed very well and earned a 2nd place overall team score within the Small Schools category! All the athletes are commended for the wonderful sportsmanship displayed as they cheered on teammates while sharing their running, jumping and throwing talents.
  1. Our Varsity team (7th & 8th graders) placed 4th with 63 points
  2. Our JV team (5th & 6th graders) placed 2nd with 66 points
  3. Our Frosh team (3rd & 4th graders) placed 1st with 67 points

Scantron scores went home last Friday, and if you are having trouble locating the parent information on our website, please follow this link to access the parent guide.

Parents of 8th grade students are reminded that a mandatory Confirmation meeting, is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7:00 pm. Prior to that meeting, parents are invited to attend an informational meeting that addresses the high school application process. Please consider attending this information session if you have any questions with respect to the Catholic high school application process. The meeting will start at 6:15 pm and will end by 6:45.

As I mentioned last week, each year we are required by the Bishop to present a lesson, provided by the Diocese, devoted to the topic of " Formation in Christian Chastity .” This program is mandated by the Office of Child Protection and provides teachers and parents with resources to help inform our students about safety from the perspective of human dignity. As primary educators of your children, parents have the right to “opt-out” their children from these lessons. The return date on opt-out forms was Monday, Oct. 15th, and it is now assumed that you have reviewed the content and are comfortable with your child participating in the lessons. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

The Enchanted Forest book fair is up and running now through Sunday, Oct. 21. Please see below for dates and extended times. Trunk or Treat is planned for Thursday, Oct. 25th. This can be a fun evening of fellowship, but please refrain from car decorations that represent the occult.

Our 3rd annual 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th. See ad below for additional details. After the race, sprint on over to Hall A for the Craft Fair , open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Racers who show their bibs at the Craft Fair are entered into the raffle! What a great way to spend time together as a community and support our parish!

Don’t forget to place your November lunch orders for your children, through our school lunch program, in conjunction with Fairfax Food Service. Use this link, https://sjschoolva.org/hot-lunch-program , to be re-directed to our webpage to find the ordering procedures. Remember to place your order no later than the 28 th of each month!

It may be safe to assume that the hot weather is behind us and all students should now wear the winter uniform, which includes sweatpants worn over-top PE shorts, on PE days. As with all things, common sense will prevail, and if students become too hot, they are permitted to remove sweaters, sweatshirts, and sweatpants.

After school clubs are up and running. If your child is interested in joining a club, please reach out to the teacher moderator for information on joining.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Rejoice and Be Glad!
