Dear Parents-
October is a glorious month in terms of celebrating some of our most amazing saints! Thursday, we celebrate the feast of Pope St. John Paul II, who served as Pope from 1978-2005, making him the third longest reigning Pope (26.5 years) after St. Peter (37 years) and Pope Blessed Pius IX (31.5 years). You can watch Mass, live-streamed from the Shrine on YouTube channel. Once the Shrine reopens, it is a worthwhile pilgrimage, if you have not yet visited.
After a year-long self-study and a five-month delay caused by the pandemic, SJS has successfully completed the DFE! The Design for Excellence (DFE) is a self-study process that challenges the school community to examine and improve its educational, religious and administrative programs. The primary goal of the DFE process is to articulate and improve the mission, the identity, and the function of a Catholic school. I am very happy to announce that the DFE Visiting Team has recommended SJS for renewal of full accreditation! The Visiting Team was impressed with our faculty and staff and their dedication to reaching all their students whether in-person or distance learners. I was very appreciative that the Visiting Team recognized the yeoman’s work done everyday by our dedicated teachers.
As predicted by many in the healthcare field, we are seeing an increase in coronavirus cases in Virginia and specifically an increase in cases in Fairfax. The positivity rate in Virginia is up to 6.1%, with the infection rate up as well, at 1.10, and the number of new cases indicates that the potential for an outbreak continues to grow, according to COVIDactnow.com. Fairfax County infection rate up, at 1.11, with a test positivity rate of 3.32%; neighboring Loudoun County has a positivity rate of 5.4%, up from last week, however, Prince William County saw a decrease in cases with a 5.6% positivity rate. Websites that track the virus indicate COVID in Fairfax County is at risk of an outbreak. As always, I remind our families to wear masks, wash hands, keep distance and avoid crowds.
Each year, St. Joseph Catholic School provides an asbestos update to parents and staff. Please use this link to access this year’s letter regarding asbestos management. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Danny Rucker.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions, or if I can be of assistance.

SCAM ALERT: Parishioners continue to receive phony emails that appear to come from Fr. Tom, Friars, and other parish staff. Any email coming from staff at St. Joseph Catholic Church will always end with @sjcherndon.org. If you receive an email asking for a favor, gift cards, or cash, do not reply.
The Friars are in good health and well taken care of by our parishioners. The only thing we ask for – prayers!
