Dear Parents-

Happy Advent!

I hope all our SJS families enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving break, and we now move into the watchful and joyful season of Advent. The 1st Sunday in Advent Gospel reminds us of the level of anticipation and watchfulness that the birth of Christ requires. I was reading an Advent devotional and the author described Advent as a “soft” and “gently subdued” time…”It is as if we sit by the window and pull back the curtain just enough to peek out in the sure knowledge that Christ will be walking toward us soon.” (Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles). We can often find ourselves overwhelmed by all we want to accomplish to get ready for Christmas, so it is helpful to be reminded that we need to be soft and gentle as we watch and wait, for Him.

The first week in Advent is also the perfect time to celebrate We Care About Catholic Charities Week . The SJS community makes an annual donation to Catholic Charities, collecting contributions through Trunk or Treat. This year, during Catholic Charities Week, SJS will make a donation of more than $1600.00!

The Book Fair opens this week, with shopping hours each weekday from 3:00-5:00PM, with extended hours on Thursday, until 7:00PM, and weekend hours on Saturday and Sunday. Please see the SJS website for exact hours of operation. A warm thank you to Mrs. Moschetto and all her volunteers who work to make this a great event...and it’s a great opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done!

Report cards will go home on Friday, Dec. 6th. For new Jr. High parents, you will notice that electives are designated as “enrichment” and you will see in the comment section the names of the elective courses your child took. If you have questions or need additional information about your child’s performance in any course or elective, please contact the teacher directly. As soon as possible, please sign and return the envelope. The report card is yours to keep.

Please consider joining Mrs. Farrell and me for Coffee with the Principal , after drop-off on Friday, December 6. Mrs. Farrell will discuss vapping and the dangers the practice poses for our children.

The Christmas Concert is Wednesday, December 11 in the school gym, at 7:00. Please join us for an evening of faith-filled and time honored Christmas songs. Miss Bambino and the children have been hard at practice, and this is sure to be a great event. Students should wear their Sunday best .

The PTO is sponsoring the SJS Winter Warmth Drive . Unwrapped hats, gloves and scarves can be dropped off as you enter the Christmas concert. All items will be donated to needy families and will be greatly appreciated during this time of year!

Don’t forget PTO Movie Night on Friday, Dec. 13. This is a great opportunity to gather as one big SJS family to enjoy The Star: The Story of the First Christmas . Please remember that students must be accompanied by a parent. This is a family event, and students should not be dropped off with friends for the evening.
