Bernie's Bark
2.05.2019
Dear Parents-

Running late, and stressed for time tonight? Feed the entire family, and support our amazing school at the same time, by eating at Chipotle, 1144 Elden Street in Herndon, from 4:00-8:00 pm . Make sure to take with you the flyer found below, so that SJS gets credit!

January was certainly a cold and snowy month! To date, we have closed 4 days for weather and other emergencies, (11/14/18; 1/14/19; 1/30/19; 2/1/19). The anticipated last day of school is Wednesday, June 12th. What remains to be scheduled is the 8th grade graduation, and I will get this on the calendar as soon as possible.

One important annual event that did not get postponed was the Spelling Bee! Thirteen 7th and 8th grade students participated. The winner of the Spelling Bee was Brigid Morrow. Runner Up was Christine Bare. Spelling skills are extremely valuable and will set our students apart at the high school level…..Congratulations, Brigid and Christine, and all participants!

The Geography Bee was also held and the following students participated. From 5th grade, Carson E., and Rogelio S.. From 6th grade, Anthony I.. From 7th grade, Christine B., Connor D., and George K.. From 8th grade, Paulette F., and Georgia H.. Georgia H. won the school championship, and Rogelio S. was runner up. Last week, Georgia completed the National Geographic GeoBee online Qualifying Test. This test will be scored and ranked with the scores of other students taking the test in Virginia. Results of the Qualifying Test will be available March 4, 2019. We wish Georgia much success!

The snowy winter weather caused many changes to our Catholic Schools Week schedule. Mrs. Wright and the CSW committee are hard at work to reschedule Corey the Dribbler, our Talent Show, and our various dress-out and spirit wear days. Don’t forget that students are invited to dress out on Thursday, February 7, (wear red in support of the American Heart Association). Jeans are approved. No holes, rips, or tears. A one-time donation of $3.00 is suggested. Funds support our SJS Christmas service project that provides backpack meals for the food insecure within our community, as well as our donation to the American Heart Association.

The front office is busy screening and enrolling our kindergartners who will start school in the fall, and we will be welcoming many new families to the Class of 2028! As I mentioned earlier, our new kindergartners will wear a modified SJS uniform, that identifies them as members of the school family, and also allows them to be easily identified as our youngest students. One of our current kindergarten students, Harper, was kind enough to model the various options, and you can find pictures below. Harper mentioned that her favorite is the green dress, and I think Miss Denneny wants one, too!
By way of further clarification with respect to the addition of shorts for boys and girls in grades 1-5, and pants for girls in grades 1-5, these additions are OPTIONAL . No one is required to purchase these options. They are made available to those families who want the choice, but are not required for families who choose to wear the standard options.

Due to all the missed days and delayed starts, the Scantron testing window has been extended to February 6th. Assuming no other schedule changes between now and the closing date, we will be able to print reports and send them home February 15th.

Many thanks to those in the school and parish who were able to participate in the NCEA National Day of Giving . St. Joseph Catholic School outperformed most other schools in the Diocese, and your generosity supports our ministry. Thank you!!!

If you haven’t already, please mark your calendar for April 6th, and plan on joining in the fun at the SJS Spring Fling Auction and Gala . I know the teachers are already hard at work planning amazing priceless auction items! Stay tuned for more details!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Rejoice and Be Glad!

Annual Dinner and Auction - April 6
Planning is well underway for our school’s largest annual fundraiser! Please join us to help make this year’s Spring Fling Auction a huge success. We invite all Saint Joseph Catholic School families to join in the occasion by attending and contributing to this event. All proceeds from the event will benefit our children. Please help us multiply our talents as a family and give, as you are able, to further our children’s educational experience here at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Consider making a donation to the auction ~ Contribute a family donation of an item, a basket, service, use of a vacation home, airline miles, join together with a fellow friend/family to create something to donate together…let your imagination go wild. You can also place a personalized family ad in the program.

Stay tuned for more Auction information!
