Bernie's Bark

Dear St. Joseph Catholic School Parents -

I am writing this week to announce the latest staffing changes, and introduce Bernie's Bark, our weekly electronic communication tool.

First, I am happy to make the following personnel announcements:

Mrs. Lisa Carson joined the administration in July as the assistant principal of our great school. Mrs. Carson has 27 years experience working in special education, and she served for six years as the assistant to the principal at St. Theresa Catholic School in Ashburn, VA. Mrs. Carson earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Mankato State University (MN), a master's degree in special education from University of Northern Iowa (IA), and holds a VA Postgraduate Professional License in special education and a VCEA license in Algebra 1. Mrs. Carson will also teach 7th grade social studies.

Ms. Monique Tuttle joins the team as Director of Marketing and Development. Ms. Tuttle has served the St. Joseph Catholic School community for many years and in many capacities. Her insight and local knowledge is invaluable, and I can't thank her enough for her willingness to help!

Mr. Carlos Pena-Ariet joins our faculty as our new music teacher. Mr. Pena-Ariet has over 20 years experience teaching music in a private music setting. Additionally, Mr. Pena-Ariet taught middle school music electives at Concordia Lutheran School. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from Catholic University (DC).

I also want to announce an expansion to the physical education department. Mrs. Julie Ankers returns to the St. Joseph Catholic School faculty, supporting kindergarten and 1st grade PE. Mrs. Deborah Carlitti expands her role in our community, providing support for 2nd grade PE.

We also welcome a new instructional assistant to our staff. Mrs. Lisa Schultz will serve as an instructional assistant on the kindergarten team.

We are almost fully staffed, with a part-time nurse position, a part-time resource position and one part-time instructional aide position left to fill.

Secondly, I am happy to introduce to you, Bernie's Bark, our weekly, electronic newsletter. Each Tuesday, the current edition of the newsletter will be delivered to the email address we have on file. If you do not receive the email, or if you receive the email at an address you do not want used, please contact Ms. Tuttle at

On Friday, August 24th, the Friday Update will be issued. The Friday update is simply reminders of important events for the following week.

We look forward to welcoming the newest members of the school community on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Kindergarten orientation is at 9:00, and new student orientation is at 3:00. Parents of kindergarteners and first graders have Back to School Night at 7:00 in the classrooms.
Finally, don't forget that the teachers and staff look forward to seeing you at the Meet and Greet on Sunday, Aug. 26 after the 8:30 and 10:00 Masses.
Rejoice and Be Glad!
Sin cerely,
