Bernie's Bark
Dear Parents -

The 2018-2019 school year is up and running, and it is so exciting to see all the students! Mrs. Carson and I are working diligently to match every face with the correct name. A process that may take a little time, but we are determined to accomplish our goal!

Thank you to all of you who stopped in to say hello at the meet and greet on Sunday. Mrs. Carson and I feel so truly blessed to have joined this great community!

I also want to thank everyone for your cooperation with the drop-off process on Monday. We are working diligently to improve the process. Please continue to follow the drop-off and pick-up procedures currently in place. If you need to drop off students prior to 7:50, please contact Mrs. Applegate ( for extended day.

Last week, Mr. Rucker and I met with our resource officer from the Town of Herndon Police Department and began a preliminary audit of school safety. In the short term, we will be making some adjustments to our fire drill procedures. We await the results of our safety audit later this year, and will communicate enhancements as appropriate.

Don't forget that you can order lunch for your children through our school lunch program, in conjunction with Fairfax Food Service. Orders can be placed via the school website. The Lunch Program can be found at the top of the home page or under Parent Resources. Remember to place your order no later than the 28th of each month!

I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 29th. Doors will open at 6:00 for refreshments and volunteer sign up. (See below for Back to School Night agenda)

We will conduct a test of our School Messenger emergency broadcast system on Thursday, Aug. 30. This is the system we will use to announce weather related closings and delays. We will use the contact information available to us on PowerSchool. For this reason, it is very important that you log onto the PowerSchool Parent Portal to update your emergency information. After the test, please notify Lisa Pearce at if there were any problems with the test, or if you did not receive the test communication.

Students and parents are asked to read and sign the Greenhouse Use Contract found at this link. Please print, read, sign and return to your teacher.

Rejoice and Be Glad!

Denise Rutledge
