Dear Parents-
Sunday, Sept. 15 was
Catechetical Sunday
, the day on which individuals who serve as catechists were called to the altar and commissioned for their ministry. During the ceremony, catechists professed their faith and pledged to teach the truths of our faith. Father Tom blessed and commissioned our school faculty and staff at the school Mass last Friday. It was a beautiful ceremony, shining a light on the importance of teaching our faith and spreading the gospel values. Parishes take a moment to reflect on the gift of catechists, and I invite you to join me in a prayer of thanksgiving for the amazing teachers in our school, as well as for those in our Religious Education program, who said yes to God’s call.
We also celebrated the accomplishments of our 8th grade students who were inducted into the St. Joseph Catholic School Chapter of the
National Junior Honor Society
. These students were selected for this honor based on their scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Congratulations to
Sophia A., Christine B., Ben B., Bella B., Alyssa C., Zoe C., Jacob C., Michael D., Jerome E., Elizabeth G., Ana G., Danny N., Sophia S., Cora T., Jillian V., Miguel V., and Meaghan W.
Representatives from
Paul VI High School
and
Bishop O’Connell High School
will visit with our 8th grade students during the school day in the upcoming weeks. It may only be September, but it is time to start thinking about high school! Additionally, any 8th grade student who seeks
admission to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
is advised that the application deadline is September 27. Please check the TJHSST website for additional information. PVI and DJO application deadline is January 10.
Scantron
testing window moves into its second week, and it will continue until September 27. Students should be well rested and relaxed in preparation for the tests. Results will be made available to parents as soon as possible, after the testing window closes.
Each year, the Arlington Diocese, Office of Catholic Schools, mandates that all students in grades 6 through 12 are made aware of the
implications of sexual harassment
. St. Joseph Catholic School seeks to provide for its students “an atmosphere where the equal dignity of man and woman is recognized, and students are free from sexual harassment.” (quoted from OCS policy.) Over the next two weeks, I will present the age-appropriate lessons to the boys and girls in grades 6-8. Please discuss this important topic with your child. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know. Please note that this program does not contain any objectionable content and represents our Catholic faith in tradition and practice.
The PowerSchool
Parent Portal
is now open. Please take the time to log in and view student grades. If you have problems with log in, please contact our registrar, Mrs. Lisa Pearce,
[email protected]
. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers if you have any concerns.
Our amazing PTO has arranged for a presentation from the founders of
Celebrate Calm.
Kirk Martin and his son, Casey, share their powerful message on managing children and family dynamics. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Martin, and seeing the presentation quite a few years ago, and I recommend this program to all parents, even those who live in relative calm. See additional information below.
As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.
Welcome one another....as Christ welcomed you!
