Bernie's Bark
9.24.2019
Dear Parents

Friday, September 27 marks the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who was educated by the Franciscans and who, through his devotion to the poor and his commitment to charity for all, reflected the legacy of St. Francis. Today, societies that honor the work of St. Vincent de Paul perform corporal and spiritual works of mercy to relieve the suffering of the poor.

Also upcoming on the Church calendar is the Transitus of St. Francis, on October 3, and the Feast of St. Francis on October 4. The Transitus celebrates the vigil of St. Francis’ death, and you may want to join the celebration at a prayer service with readings and songs that reflect the life of St. Francis, and recall the events surrounding his death. See details below. If that doesn’t work for you, please join us at the school Mass on Friday, October 4, to celebrate the life of one of the most beloved of all saints!

We are in the third and final week of the first Scantron window. The window closes Friday, September 27, and score reports will be sent home shortly thereafter. Teachers will evaluate the Scantron report and use it as the baseline to measure student growth over the next two Scantron test sessions.

In conjunction with Scantron, remember that trimesters can be long, and it is important to stay informed on student grades and assignments. The PowerSchool Parent Portal allows parents to view student grades, and stay on top of assignments. Please log in. If you have problems with log in, please contact our registrar, Mrs. Lisa Pearce, [email protected] . If you have any concerns about the Scantron report, or grades in PowerSchool, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Don’t forget to plan for your October lunch orders. Follow this link to reach the Lunch Program information on the SJS website. Remember to place your orders no later than the 28th of this month. I have to say these lunches look and smell very good. When I visit in the lunchroom, the kids tell me lunch tastes good, and it is plentiful. No one leaves hungry!

Please join me and our counselors, Patty Farrell and Beth Henry, for  Coffee with the Principal, Friday, October 4, after morning carpool. We will look at an overview of our plans to address school climate and the social-emotional needs of our students. I hope to see you there.

We will have an 11:30 dismissal on Friday, September 27 , for teacher professional development. Teachers will have a work session and presentation on Anxiety, Depression, ADD and Behavior Issues in the Classroom. Teachers will come away with skills and strategies to support students.

As always, if you have any questions, or if I can be of any assistance, please let me know.

Welcome one another....as Christ welcomed you!

Milling and Paving - Plan Accordingly
The Town of Herndon will be milling and paving Elden Street from Center Street to Sterling Road starting later this week. The work on that particular stretch could start as early as Wednesday, September 25th. Traffic may be impacted so using alternate routes is the best course of action. The Town of Herndon has proposed to use Ferndale and Center Street to get to Vine Street and the school. While the work is only scheduled from 9am until 3pm there may be days where the work will need to continue beyond 3pm to get portions done.

We ask that you allow extra time and we appreciate your patience!
