Acts 8:1-3 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
And Saul approved of their killing him.
Saul Persecutes the Church
That day a severe persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria.  Devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation over him.  But Saul was ravaging the church by entering house after house; dragging off both men and women, he committed them to prison.

On August 4 th Rev. Dr. Nancy Bowen will be leading us in a conversation about human sexuality. Dr. Bowen is a Biblical Scholar and Professor of Old Testament at Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana. She has a PhD in Old Testament from Princeton Theological Seminary and is the author of the Commentary on Ezekiel and various other commentaries on biblical theology. Nancy is also a “child” of St. John’s United Methodist Church, growing up in our church family. This will be a great opportunity to explore concerns that are facing us as United Methodist through the lens of scripture. Come join together on August 4 th, 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center.

We are seeking a Sanctuary Steward (or two) to keep the sanctuary looking spiffy, organized, and well-stocked with sharp pencils, offering envelopes, and prayer cards.
Linda Hogan would come in every other week and it took her about 1.5-2 hours per time. If two people wanted to work together it would definitely go faster. Please contact Claudia Giese if you are interested. 883-9717 ext 128.

Did you ever hear a popular song about angels, heaven, death, Jesus, or love, and think, “What? That’s just so wrong!” St. John’s email Bible study will take a light-hearted look at some of the good, the bad, and the truly weird theology that we hear in popular music. What’s “The purpose of a man”? Is it true that “on the day that you were born the angels got together”? “Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven?” Current readers have suggested many of their favorites and un-favorites; join us and add yours to the mix. Pick up a study guide in the Welcome Center beginning July 28. To get scripture readings and study tips by email five days a week, including links to lyrics and videos, write to Regina at drhunter@nmia.com.

Mission & Outreach

See what’s happening in July for missions at St. John’s! Come by the Hospitality Center to pick up your copy.

JULY SPECIAL OFFERING - Zuni Elementary School
St. John’s has had a special relationship with Zuni Elementary School next door for many years. We have purchased school supplies and backpacks for children who can’t afford them. Sometimes counselors set up a little store and let children choose what they need. We have also provided copy paper and other supplies for teachers and a variety of reading books for their classrooms. Finally, at the beginning of each school year, St. John’s hosts a very popular Back to School luncheon for the teachers and staff.
Mr. Rogers used to sing “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood”…and end with an invitation…”Won’t you be my neighbor?” Yes, it is a beautiful day in Albuquerque and at St. John’s. And this is our chance to continue to be good neighbors. Please give generously.

St. John's will be hosting families from July 28 - Aug 4. Volunteers with a variety of skill sets needed. We needs meal providers, evening conversationalists, people who can sleep at the church, and shifts on Saturday, Aug. 3. Please stop by the Hospitality Center and the Abide service to sign up from June 25 - July 21. If you have questions contact Linn Furnish by phone or email 505-884-6626 or swimsew@comcast.net OR Jenn Shields by phone or email 505-450-9978 or jennshields200@yahoo.com.

Buy a Cinder Block to Support Operacion Hogar! Support Operacion Hogar mission to help build a cinder block home for a needy family in Juarez, Mexico, in November, by coming to the Hospitality Centers and purchasing a cinder block for $20. Contact Donna at donnabruce@comcast.net.

This summer we will be collecting inexpensive sunglasses, sun screen, hats (all kinds), shelf stable regular and sugar free frozen pops (like Otter pops) and toiletries. Collecting through July!

During the month of July, let's think about the many children in our community who won't have the benefit of the school lunch program for at least another six weeks. As you shop this month for The Storehouse, please think "high protein" for such items as: Nutrigrain bars; protein bars; individual packages of nuts; individual peanut butter/cheese snack crackers; fruit cups; shelf-stable tuna pouches or tuna lunch kits. Also, jars of peanut butter and boxes of powdered milk are always appreciated. Thanks for your generous donations, and please place them in the wire baskets located in the Hospitality Centers.
Welcome to new member, Edith Hendrix!
