Weekly Disciple
September 20, 2019
Worship with us this Sunday!
May the light of God illumine the hearts of our souls.
May the flame of Christ kindle us to love and service.
May the fire of the Spirit free us to live this day and receive the calling of God upon our lives,
For such a time as this.
Our current sermon series: “Deep Calls to Deep” focuses on God’s call to us. What has God called you to do/be?

Catch Shea this Sunday to fill out a card! The cards can also be found in the Hospitality Center. Fill one out, snap a selfie, post it, tagging St. Johns UMC, or email it to Shea at communicate@stjohns-abq.org!

Genesis, Chapters 1 & 2: Let’s figure out what “speaking order out of chaos” means. What does the ‘image of God’ entail? Why a Garden? Why woman out of man? Why forbidden fruit? The answers will help us figure out the human situation.

Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019: DEEP DIVES into GENESIS: Adam and Eve, Part 2
Genesis, Chapter 3: Let’s unpack why a talking snake? Why was Eve tempted first? What does it mean that their ‘eyes were opened’? That they were ‘naked’? What does the blame game reveal about our fallen state? Adam and Eve are us!

Happenings

TABLE TALKS
New Table Talks groups will resume beginning October 1 and conclude Oct. 31. Table Talks are small groups that meet once a week. We need people willing to host these groups. You may host a group at a coffee shop, a restaurant, or in your home. The ideal group size would be around 8 people, some groups have more, some less.

We need 3-5 hosts for new groups in October. Hosts will be given a jar with questions to jump start conversations. The time, location, and day are determined by the Host.

If you would be willing to host a group, please sign-up at the hospitality center. Questions? Contact Rev. Kelly Giese : kellyg@stjohns-abq.org or call the church office.
MOUNTAIN CATHEDRALS Saturday, September 21 7:00 am - 2:30 pm
The September Mountain Cathedrals hike will be in San Lorenzo Canyon, in the wilderness west of I-25 partway down to Socorro. The scenery is reminiscent of the Escalante Canyon area in Utah. This is a moderate hike, 4.2 miles round trip in a dry streambed, partially on jeep trail. There is ~100' elevation change but at one point we scramble around a dry waterfall. There are optional side trips to the rim and up side canyons. We'll meet at St. John's at 7:00 am to carpool; a second rendezvous point in Los Lunas near I-25 (7:30) will also be available (Southeast corner of Home Depot parking lot behind the Starbucks off of Exit 203; look for Kelly Giese there with her blue Mazda CX-5). For information contact Mike Furnish (884-6626) or Kelly.

UNDERGROUND SUNDAY NEXT WEEK!
All 3rd, 4th, & 5th Graders, be ready. Next Sunday, Sept 15th is the first gathering of the new year of our monthly Jr. youth group during Sunday school at 9:30 am. All students and children go to your usual Sunday classroom and we will come get you.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN - Thursday, October 3 at 9:30 am
This is our year to celebrate "150 Years of Mission Service", so let's do it together at our meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 241 (please note the earlier start time). Our talented historian, Norma Argo, will present a special history and heritage lesson filled with fascinating tidbits from our past. We'll learn about some of the dedicated women who answered the call of God and paved the way of the future for us. These stories will help reaffirm our purpose of turning faith, hope, and love into action. Our meetings are open to all ladies (and any interested men), and we're always delighted to welcome guests. So, please join us for fun, fellowship and inspiration!

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED
Church Women United, an ecumenical Christian women’s group, will meet on October 4th for their Annual Retreat at Community of Christ Church, 4701 Juan Tabo NE. Coffee Fellowship will begin at 9:00 am. The retreat leader will be Leslie Bledsoe from the United Methodist Church, a licensed social worker. Leslie’s theme will be “Born to Be Useful—Not Useless.” Because of a medical condition, Leslie is totally blind, but continues her ministry to wherever it is needed. She will demonstrate some of the technology and techniques she uses to keep her going! Please join us! Questions? Contact Amy Costales at 867-4207.

CHARGE CONFERENCE
This year’s 2019 Charge Conference will be held on Tuesday, October 8 at 6:30 pm in the Family Life Center. Please make plans to join us on this night.

SUNDAY ATTENDANCE SHEETS
To ensure that your attendance has been recorded for Sunday services, it would be much appreciated to please write your first and last name legibly along with a contact phone number and/or email address so that we can contact you if the need arises. If you are a visitor, please complete the Attendance Sheet so that we can mail you a Welcome Letter. Thank you!

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
Does salvation just mean “going to heaven,” or does it have something to do with the daily blessings we receive from God in this life? God’s plan for salvation is concerned with our physical life and abundant life, as well as eternal life.  St. John’s email Bible study of salvation continues with Point 3: God’s Plan for Your Salvation is Broader than You Think. Pick up a study guide in the Welcome Center, or contact Regina Hunter, 294-2877 or drhunter@nmia.com , for daily study tips and scripture readings by email.
OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT OUR PRE-SCHOOL & TEACHERS
In October, we will have a wonderful opportunity to help the teachers of St. John’s Pre-School. Each teacher has created a big-item wishlist for their classroom. There will be a table set up outside the entrance to the church for the 8:15 and 11:00 am services and inside the FLC before and after the 9:30 am service. PASSES will also be available between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm in the church office during the month of October. Please see our receptionist, Debbie Brown.

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL OFFERING: Sacramento Methodist Camp
Nestled in the Sacramento Mountains thirty miles from Cloudcroft and surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Camp and Conference Center has been a place to unplug from life’s hectic pace and reconnect with God since 1931. St. John’s Youth regularly find God in camping experiences at Sacramento, and our United Methodist Women recently returned from a retreat there.

THE STOREHOUSE
With cooling temperatures on the horizon, let's think soups and comfort food when we shop for The Storehouse during the month of September. Here's a few ideas: hearty soups with chunks of meat and/or vegetables; all varieties of chili; canned pastas containing meat; boxed mac-and-cheese; any shelf-stable packaged meal kits; powdered milk; and of course, peanut butter. Take your pick or donate an assortment! Also, it's the season for caseload sales at the supermarkets, so watch for those special bargains! Please place your donations in the wire bins located in the Hospitality Centers. As always, we truly appreciate your continued generosity!
