The Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is right in our own backyard! It is the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge. On the former location of Price’s Valley Gold Dairies. There is a 2.5 mile loop that follows the river and is part of the Rio Grande Valley State Park. Many hikes are measured by their miles and elevation gain, this hike in the refuge and bosque has no elevation gain and can be better measured in the sounds you hear and its peacefulness. The October Mountain Cathedrals Hike will be held on the 4th Saturday Oct 26th. Plan to meet at St John’s by 8 am and we will carpool to the Refuge. Bring binoculars, cameras, maybe even a duck call? As always, bring sunscreen, a hat, and a hearty snack or lunch and water. More info - contact Kelly Giese or Mike Furnish. Also save the date: Ojito Hoodoo trail on Nov. 16. Until our trails meet!

Stephen Ministry to begin at St. John’s UMC
A few months ago our administrative council voted to become a Stephen Ministry congregation. They determined there was a need for ongoing Christian care that our pastor and staff could not continue to do alone. This ministry is needed because we all go through tough times in life, times that are turbulent and unsettling. In the midst of these challenging seasons, it can be extremely helpful to have someone come alongside us to give understanding and encouragement – to provide stability, hope, and Biblical principles to help us through the storm.
Through Stephen Ministry, a team of St. John’s church members will begin training to become our Stephen Ministers. This training will consist of 50 hours in Christian caregiving skills, covering topics such as active listening, distinctively Christian care, feelings, confidentiality, and crisis theory, as well as ministering to people in specific situations such as divorce, grief, and hospitalization. Even after they begin providing care, Stephen Ministers will continue to meet with their Stephen Leaders for continuing education and supervision as they strive to offer the highest-quality Christian caregiving.
A major emphasis of Stephen Minister training and supervision is on confidentiality. Stephen Ministry is a very confidential ministry; those receiving care can be sure that their identity and what goes on in the caring relationship will remain private.
We expect our Stephen Ministry to be a source of warmth, care, and blessing for many years to come, enabling the entire congregation to grow as a nurturing community where people are cherished and cared for and their needs taken seriously, all in the name of Jesus Christ.
If you are interested in becoming a Stephen Minister please join us for an Introductory Meeting on October 20 at 1:00 p.m. or October 24 at 5:30 p.m. in room 149/151. To learn more or get more information, contact Gina Rivera at rivera.vg@gmail.com ; Pam Rowley at prowley@stjohns-abq.org or Doug Rowley at rdrowleymd@yahoo.com .

I’m Waiting, God, finding blessing in God’s delay  by Barb Roose (Bible study)
Tuesdays, November 5 – November 26 (4 weeks), 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., led by Dara Bell

Cost of study materials, $11; registration deadline, October 2

You know you’re supposed to “let go and let God,” and you’ve tried. But what’s taking so long? Why isn’t God answering your prayers? No wonder you feel like taking matters into your own hands. In I’m Waiting, God, a four-week Bible study for women, Barb Roose invites us to explore the stories of women in the Bible who had to wait for God—women like Hannah, Ruth, Tamar, and the unnamed woman who suffered for over a decade with a painful medical condition. If you feel anxious, angry, discouraged or depressed because God isn’t giving you what you want, their stories will breathe fresh hope into your life and offer you practical next steps in your time of waiting.
Preparing My Heart for Advent  by Ann Marie Stewart (Advent study)

Preparing My Heart for Advent encourages readers to stop, look, listen, and experience  Immanuel  – God with Us! Immerse yourself in scriptures during the months of November and December, so that you are more likely to keep Christ in Christmas – before coming entangled by shopping and holiday events. Preparing My Heart for Advent is a one-month seasonal Bible study followed by a one-month devotional.

In The Faithful, you will explore pivotal moments in the lives of five of our Old Testament predecessors. Mission & Outreach
Silver Horizons provides free groceries to over 3,000 low-income seniors, monthly, through their Senior Food Markets at various locations within a four-county area. To assist in meeting this ongoing need, our collection in October includes: canned meats, such as tuna, ham, and chicken; shelf-stable rice, beans, and pasta in 3-lb. or less packages; and granola or protein bars. Please place your donations in the wire baskets located in the Hospitality Centers. Silver Horizons is always in need of volunteers, so if you're searching for a volunteer project, you may want to consider working in their warehouse, or at one of their food markets. For more information, go to silverhorizons.org.

Our Missions Team is focusing on collecting new non-food items for two organizations in October. For Casa Esperanza, we'll collect toothbrushes (individually wrapped), full-size toothpaste, and mouthwash. For our guests of Mobile Food Pantry, we're collecting men's and women's deodorant, in regular sizes, to be distributed at our November Mobile Food Pantry. Thank you for your continued generosity, and please place your donations in the wire baskets in the Hospitality Centers.

Dinner is Served! The next Casa Esperanza will be Monday, October 28th at 5:30pm. The meal and fellowship provided during the evening is a ministry to the many caregivers and patients that have to be away from the comforts of home. Please sign up, to provide food or help serve, in the Hospitality Center or at the Abide Service. Contact Jenn Shields at jennshields200@yahoo.com or 505-450-9978 for more information. Thank you for your generous spirit!

A huge thanks to all involved!!!

Our next Family Promise hosting is October 13 through the 20. We are starting signups early, due to the busyness of State Fair and Balloon Fiesta! Please signup in the Welcome Center or FLC. Contact Linn Furnish at 884-6626 for more information. Thank you.

Do you need to update your training for volunteering with children and special needs adults? Please attend training on Sunday, September 29 at 1:00 pm in RM 250 (movie room). Every two years, volunteers need to update their Safe Sanctuary Training. For more information about Family Promise please contact Linn Furnish at 505- 884-6626 or swimsew@comcast.net or Jenn Shields at 505-450-9978 or jennshields200@yahoo.com.

Nestled in the Sacramento Mountains thirty miles from Cloudcroft and surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Camp and Conference Center has been a place to unplug from life’s hectic pace and reconnect with God since 1931. St. John’s Youth regularly find God in camping experiences at Sacramento, and our United Methodist Women recently returned from a retreat there.

With cooling temperatures on the horizon, let's think soups and comfort food when we shop for The Storehouse during the month of September. Here's a few ideas: hearty soups with chunks of meat and/or vegetables; all varieties of chili; canned pastas containing meat; boxed mac-and-cheese; any shelf-stable packaged meal kits; powdered milk; and of course, peanut butter. Take your pick or donate an assortment! Also, it's the season for caseload sales at the supermarkets, so watch for those special bargains! Please place your donations in the wire bins located in the Hospitality Centers. As always, we truly appreciate your continued generosity!
