September 18: “What’s Next for St. John’s UMC?”

Why do we still read these old stories of Genesis? Because they tell us so much about ourselves! But we need to attend to them carefully to unpack their rich meaning. Join Jack Nuzum Wednesdays, Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, at 6 PM as he leads a class trying to come up with answers to these questions and others from Genesis 2 & 3: Why a Garden? Why a snake? What does it mean for Adam and Eve to lose their innocence and wake up to existence in time and face death? Why is the price of knowledge so high? The discussion should be fun because these characters are WE OURSELVES!

6:00 - 7:00 pm
Students and families, we will be launching our study of the Gospel of Mark as part of WNL starting this week up in Room 260. Bring your friends, parents, grandparents, it is an inter-generational class.

6:00 - 7:00 pm
Take a deep breath and enjoy a space of movement and stillness with yoga instructor Alli Newsom. Suggested $5 donation goes toward disaster relief efforts.

5:15 - 7:00 pm
NewSound Children’s Choir takes place in room 231 from 5:15 - 6:00 pm. Kids’ Bible Club occurs from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. We will learn about our Bible heroes! Contact Therese at tmacali@stjohns-abq.org.

TABLE TALKS - Sign up this Sunday!
New Table Talks groups will resume beginning October 1 and conclude Oct. 31. Table Talks are small groups that meet once a week. We need people willing to host these groups. You may host a group at a coffee shop, a restaurant, or in your home. The ideal group size would be around 8 people, some groups have more, some less.

We need 3-5 hosts for new groups in October. Hosts will be given a jar with questions to jump start conversations. The time, location, and day are determined by the Host.

If you would be willing to host a group, please sign-up at the hospitality center THIS SUNDAY September 15. Questions? Contact Rev. Kelly Giese : kellyg@stjohns-abq.org or call the church office.

UNDERGROUND SUNDAY THIS WEEKEND! - September 15 at 9:30 am
All 3rd, 4th, & 5th Graders, be ready. Next Sunday, Sept 15th is the first gathering of the new year of our monthly Jr. youth group during Sunday school at 9:30AM. All students and children go to your usual Sunday classroom and we will come get you.

Now that you know our Worship Team Volunteer Fair is this Sunday, September 15, think about the wide range of opportunities that await you. We need more people to join our "already dedicated" volunteers who work in the nine areas of Worship Team ministry: Chancel and children's choir; Hospitality Center(s); Worship Arts; Ushers; Greeters; Sound/lights booth (training will be provided); Liturgists (training will be provided); Sanctuary stewards; and Communion Servers. Choose the area that suits your interests and volunteer as much or as little as you wish. If you have questions, please bring them to the fair and we'll have representatives waiting to help you. "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." Mark 10:45

No not the song…No not the building… It’s the church’s Endowment Foundation.
Did you know St John’s has its very own financial foundation? It does, and here’s how you can be a part of it. By simply remembering the foundation as part of your estate plan, you can be helping this church we love for years to come. A tithe of 10% of your remaining estate in your will would allow you to keeping giving long after you are no longer passing the offering plate. Think about it! Contact Janice McCrary, Executive Director, at 883-9717 to learn more.

If you have always wanted to sing in a choir, or if you miss singing in a choir, or if you love Southern Gospel music, the JOY Singers may be just what you’ve been looking for. The JOY singers have been a choir at St. John’s for more than 25 years and they are getting ready to start back up for the fall/winter season. They currently have about 25 members and are always looking for new members to share their love of singing gospel music with each other and with others. This fall, they will be working on a great gospel Christmas musical to sing for churches, church groups, and retirement facilities. Rehearsals, which are normally on Mondays, 10:30-11:30, will begin on Monday, September 16 in the choir room. If you’d like to check us out, please email irdoug@comcast.net to let me know you're coming and I’ll have your music ready.
MOUNTAIN CATHEDRALS Saturday, September 21 7:00 am - 2:30 pm
The September Mountain Cathedrals hike will be in San Lorenzo Canyon, in the wilderness west of I-25 partway down to Socorro. The scenery is reminiscent of the Escalante Canyon area in Utah. This is a moderate hike, 4.2 miles round trip in a dry streambed, partially on jeep trail. There is ~100' elevation change but at one point we scramble around a dry waterfall. There are optional side trips to the rim and up side canyons. We'll meet at St. John's at 7:00 am to carpool; a second rendezvous point in Los Lunas near I-25 (7:30) will also be available (Southeast corner of Home Depot parking lot behind the Starbucks off of Exit 203; look for Kelly Giese there with her blue Mazda CX-5). For information contact Mike Furnish (884-6626) or Kelly.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN - Thursday, October 3 at 9:30 am
This is our year to celebrate "150 Years of Mission Service", so let's do it together at our meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 241 (please note the earlier start time). Our talented historian, Norma Argo, will present a special history and heritage lesson filled with fascinating tidbits from our past. We'll learn about some of the dedicated women who answered the call of God and paved the way of the future for us. These stories will help reaffirm our purpose of turning faith, hope, and love into action. Our meetings are open to all ladies (and any interested men), and we're always delighted to welcome guests. So, please join us for fun, fellowship and inspiration!

Mission & Outreach
Our next Family Promise hosting is October 13 through the 20. We are starting signups early, due to the busyness of State Fair and Balloon Fiesta! Please signup in the Welcome Center or FLC. Contact Linn Furnish at 884-6626 for more information. Thank you.

Nestled in the Sacramento Mountains thirty miles from Cloudcroft and surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Camp and Conference Center has been a place to unplug from life’s hectic pace and reconnect with God since 1931. St. John’s Youth regularly find God in camping experiences at Sacramento, and our United Methodist Women recently returned from a retreat there.

With cooling temperatures on the horizon, let's think soups and comfort food when we shop for The Storehouse during the month of September. Here's a few ideas: hearty soups with chunks of meat and/or vegetables; all varieties of chili; canned pastas containing meat; boxed mac-and-cheese; any shelf-stable packaged meal kits; powdered milk; and of course, peanut butter. Take your pick or donate an assortment! Also, it's the season for caseload sales at the supermarkets, so watch for those special bargains! Please place your donations in the wire bins located in the Hospitality Centers. As always, we truly appreciate your continued generosity!
