How New Department of Labor  Rules  Effect Your Organization
What are the new Department of Labor rules and how do they impact the nonprofit community?
Once upon a time there was a nonprofit in Missouri. This nonprofit had a $2M budget and many full-time salaried employees making an average salary of $35,000 each. The nonprofit held many events in the summer, including performances and fundraisers. The happy employees willingly worked 50-60 hours each week to deliver the mission and achieve successful fundraisers.

Then one day the Department of Labor issued final rules relating to overtime and the nonprofit world was never to be the same.....
Such is the world nonprofits will live in effective December 1, 2016. A world where they will very likely be required to pay overtime to employees if they do not understand the new rules and modify the structure of employee pay or work expectations.

Staff News

Brian joined Support Kansas City as Client Accounting Manager in June 2016. Brian's experience includes working for both profit and nonprofit organizations in Kansas City, New York and Los Angeles. Brian brings 22 years of experience and expertise in internal auditing, accounting, budgetary development and planning in large for profit entities. SKC clients will benefit from his experience in financial accounting and reporting, budgeting, 990's, donor relations, human resources and nonprofit administration.


Laura joined Support Kansas City as Client Support Staff in July 2016. Laura is a graduate of the University of Kansas with nearly five years of non-profit experience. Laura brings both database management and development experience to our staff.


Joanne joined Support Kansas City in September 2016 as a Bookkeeper. She previously served as the Director of Operations for Missouri Contemporary Ballet and Owen/Cox Dance Group. Joanne brings over five years of non-profit administration experience, including bookkeeping, fundraising, and database management. She holds a BFA in Ballet Performance and Teaching from the University of Utah. Joanne shares a passion for the arts and the non-profit community in Kansas City.


Ellen joined Support Kansas City as Office Administrator in September 2016. Ellen holds both a Master of Science in Family Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and Human Services with a minor in Women's Studies from Kansas State University. She was raised in Kansas City and has a heart for local nonprofits and the families they serve. Ellen has more than four years working with nonprofits, including volunteering in the community, internships and her professional work.

Shared Spaces at Nonprofit Leadership Alliance
The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance has been building a talent pipeline for nearly 70 years. Since 1948, the Alliance has been working to increase its impact in the nonprofit sector by offering its nationally recognized credential, the Certified Nonprofit Professional or CNP.

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri for many reasons. Arguably, the main reason is the founder, H. Roe Bartle - a Kansas City icon, former Mayor and Boy Scout leader. Bartle thrived in the Kansas City community and made a conscious effort to build a solid foundation for the local sector. 
  Making its home in Kansas City is only appropriate. The Alliance is dedicated to building strong leadership, strong communities and strong organizations, and Kansas City is one of the country's most active philanthropic communities.
Sharing Resources for Nonprofits Like You

REACH Foundation's Rural Health Initiative 

In 2012, the REACH Healthcare Foundation created the Rural Health Initiative (RHI) with a goal of breaking through persistent barriers to health care access for rural residents who are economically and medically underserved. The initiative focuses on three rural counties in Kansas and Missouri that are part of the REACH service area. 

In October 2016, the foundation convened rural health partners, technical assistance providers, foundation leaders and others engaged in rural health to reflect on the experiences and results of the initiative. Read more about the RHI here.

Financial Accounting Standards Board

Financial Accounting Standards Board issued an Accounting Standards Update that simplifies and improves how a not-for-profit organization classifies its net assets, as well as the information it presents in financial statements and notes about its liquidity, financial performance, and cash flows. Amendments are effective for annual financial statements issued for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2017. 


The Basics and Beyond: 2016 Nonprofit Leadership Conference 

Join this one-day nonprofit leadership conference in Kansas City co-hosted by Nonprofit Missouri and the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the Bloch School of Management. The conference will bring together professionals from across the nonprofit sector to learn from notable experts and thought leaders.
Keynote Speaker: Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits            
Jan is a leading writer and thinker on nonprofit organizations with particular emphasis on boards of directors, business planning, and the role of nonprofits in society. Her books include Best of the Board Café, Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability and  The Nonprofit's Guide to HR . Jan founded and wrote for the Blue Avocado magazine with 64,000 subscribers.  Prior to CalNonprofits and Blue Avocado, she served for 14 years as executive director of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in which she was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by The Nonprofit Times .

KCCCI's Learning Community meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is Wednesday, November 16, from 8:30-10:30am.

This month, Tracie McClendon-Cole, Deputy Director of the KCMO Health Department, and Rashid Junaid, Aim4Peace Violence Prevention, will be presenting on Violence & Anti-Violence as a public health issue.

The Legacy of Ewing Kauffman
Throughout 2016, the Kauffman Foundation has marked the 100th anniversary of Ewing Kauffman's birth. The Foundation has recalled Mr. Kauffman's passions for education and entrepreneurship that guided a new style of philanthropy that sought to invest in bold approaches to address the root causes of complex social problems.
Ewing Kauffman energized people around him, rallied his hometown of Kansas City and challenged everyone around him to do more. Mr. K lived a remarkable life and left us all with a lot to live up to. During this centennial celebration, the Foundation pledged to honor its past by continuing to work with the community to shape the future.
