24 Hour Movement Guidelines Virtual Panel

Key Takeaways
• During the pandemic Canadians have decreased their PA levels, increased their sedentary time, and sleep patterns have been disrupted.
• Physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep are inter-related. The benefits of physical activity are not the same if the activity is done at the expense of sleep.
|
|
Strategies for getting a better sleep:
-Go to bed at the same time every day
-Avoid caffeine consumption in the late afternoon
-Expose yourself to bright light in the morning
-Make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep – dark, quiet, and comfortable
-Develop a relaxing routine before bedtime
-Reserve your bedroom for sleeping only – keep cell phones, computers, and televisions out of your bedroom
-No screens 30-60mins before bedtime
-Exercise regularly
If you don’t fall asleep within 15mins, don’t stay in bed, go to another room to read a book, relax, and try again when your body is ready.
|
|
Strategies for reducing your sedentary time:
-Ask yourself, when is sitting required and when is it the default? More often than not, sitting is the default.
-Rather than sitting in your office, consider investing in a standing desk.
-Take breaks
-Drink lots of water
-Software options or smartphone apps may help to remind you to take breaks
-Change your environment
|
|
Physical activity and mental health:
In order for physical activity to become habitual, it needs to be perceived as obtainable, enjoyable, and preferred
-Perform physical activity when you are the least tired
-Integrate small bursts of physical activity into your day if you don’t have much time
-Perform physical activity in a context or environment that is comfortable for you
-Remember that some physical activity is better than none
-Associate objects in your home with movement (e.g., every time you use the microwave, toaster or kettle, perform push-ups on the counter or squats)
-Use your phone or other technology (e.g., Fitbit) to give you feedback on your movement
-Shift your focus to thinking about what your body can do, rather than what it looks like
