Inquiry@Queen’s Undergraduate Research Conference
March 9th - 11th 2022

This conference celebrates the research of a new generation of scholars and offers a platform for their voices, ideas, and creativity. The conference theme, Reaching Beyond, invites contemplation of our everyday lives, our ways of thinking, and how we engage in questioning and exploring the world around us.

The call for submissions is open on the new I@Q website The deadline to submit an abstract is Friday, February 18, 2022.
This year’s program will combine short online presentations and posters in a live Zoom question and answer forum. We hope to see both individual and group projects that capture art, performance, creative writing, applied research, field work, community engagement, archival research … and more. Details on presentation format and how to submit your proposal are on the I@Q website. All abstracts and presentations will be formally published in the I@Q Conference Proceedings.

Summer 2022

The School of Kinesiology and Health Studies has 1 position available in the summer of 2022 assisting with NSERC-funded research.
VALUE: Awards have a maximum value of $6,000 for a 16-week period plus a supplement of at least 25% of the award value paid by your supervisor.
NOTES
  1. Priority will be given to students who are registered in the KIN program at Queen’s.
  2. Although NSERC states that an applicant "must have obtained at least a "B" (2.7) average in your previous years of study" students are advised that due to the competition for the one position in the SKHS, students are not normally competitive unless they have obtained at least a minimum of A- (3.7 cumulative GPA) in their previous year.
  3. A decision will be made shortly after the deadline so both the student & professor have time to plan their summers.
  4. Indigenous students are eligible for an additional position and are encouraged to apply if they meet the eligibility requirements.
This award is sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC) to stimulate interest in research and to encourage undergraduates to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career.
Sensorimotor Exploration Lab under the supervision of Dr. Gerome Manson
 
This position involves assisting in the collection and analysis of data in Dr. Gerome’s Neuromechanics Lab. This will entail working with research participants and other members of the research team, as well as mastering the use of laboratory equipment and performing some coding. Experiments may involve both in lab data collection, and outdoor testing using wearables. Success in this position will require excellent attention to detail, well-developed communication and problem-solving skills, an ability to learn and work independently and with the team, and a strong interest in human motor control and biomechanics.

The Human Rights and Equity Office (HREO) invites you to take part in this year's HREO Learning Challenge between February and April 2022. 
 
The HREO Learning Challenge is a set of virtual and self-paced learning opportunities designed to give you a foundational understanding of human rights, equity, anti-racism, accessibility and sexual violence prevention and response.
 
How it Works:
1.    Register for the Learning Challenge beginning February 2022. Educational offerings have been customized for Faculty, Staff and Students
2.    Complete five selected HREO trainings between February and April 2022.
3.    Receive a certificate of completion if all five HREO trainings are completed by April 30, 2022.

The Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation invites students to submit essays to the 2022 Jack Boan Student Essay Competition

Essays must be no more than 4,000 words in length (inclusive of references and appendices) and address any topic in health services or health policy. The Hall Foundation will award three prizes annually for the best submissions:

Best doctoral submission: $2,000
Best masters submission: $1,500
Best undergraduate submission: $1,000

  • Winning essays will be selected by a panel appointed by the President of the Hall Foundation.

  • Authors, titles, and abstracts of the winning essays will be posted on the Hall Foundation website
  • Please submit your essay as a PDF file or word document to Nicole O’Byrne by 1 March 2022.
  • Winners will be notified by email in advance of the annual Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research conference.
  • Prizes will be awarded during the conference. Essays may be submitted in English or in French and may be based on course or thesis work.

In recognition of the primary importance of teaching excellence at Queen's University, the Alumni Association and the Centre for Teaching and Learning presents the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching to a Queen’s teacher who shows outstanding knowledge, teaching ability, and accessibility to students.

Award Eligibility & Criteria
The recipient of the award will receive $5,000 and the Teaching Award statuette presented at a University-Wide Teaching Award Reception.
Candidates should be:
  • A teacher at Queen's University who has the primary responsibility for a course offered to registered Queen's students (i.e. organization and presentation)
  • For this purpose, classrooms are not limited to lecture halls but include other teaching environments such as laboratories, seminars and tutorials

ASUS Peer Tutors ASUS Peer Tutoring (APT) is a new and improved service that partners upper-year students who have excelled in courses with students who need some help. At $15 per hour, APT is both the cheapest tutoring service in Kingston, and the highest paying undergraduate job on campus. 

PASS Peer Academic Support Service (PASS) is a volunteer service that is run through the Faculty of Arts and Science to assist first-year students. The service is designed to ease student transition into university and to promote academic success.

SKHS In the News
The Faculty of Arts and Science welcomes four Queen's National Scholars and three more professors after intensive search that focused on equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and scholarship. SKHS welcomes Dr. Joseph Kangmennaang!
Dr. Kangmennaang’s research focuses on how the places we live, work, interact, and play impact population health and well-being with regards to (re)emerging infections and non-communicable diseases.
“My current research explores Black immigrants’ experience in the United States and Canada. Specifically, I am interested in understanding Black immigrants' mental health and well-being challenges; especially the role of transnational social connections and social capital,” Dr. Kangmennaang says.
