THANKFUL CONNECTIONS

Happy Summer Everyone! The SKIP SCOOP team took a month off to enjoy family, friends, and this fine weather in our beautiful slice of paradise! I feel so lucky to be living in this community!

In the theme of counting my blessings, I want to give a shout out to all of our local businesses and friends who made our SKIP Into Summer Auction Benefit a success! We had a total of 15 items up for auction; all donated by our generous community. What I enjoyed most was connecting with the auction winners! There was the mom, who picked up her namesake daughter’s basket and also wrote a check to SKIP. The man who bought “Cloud Study” for his husband's birthday. The sweet guy who regularly donates every month to SKIP and asked about employer matching. The gentleman who hopes to retire here and volunteer down the road. The man who bought my cousin’s quilt two years in a row! The guy who has been eyeing artist’s Lorraine DeProspo's work for years and finally got a piece and wants a bigger one too! And the grandmother who won the stuffed giraffe from Kidstuff and promised that her grandkids wouldn’t touch it…good luck with that one! All of these winners had one thing in common, and that my friends, is philanthropy. Most said they were involved in their local charities and were passionate about food insecurities. On that note, check out the GBFB's latest eye-opening findings on Massachusetts Food Insecurities in this newsletter.

Finally, we had some very generous lunch sponsors, from a fabulous volunteer in Provincetown to a donor from the big island of Hawaii.   If you’d like to help us kick off our 31st season, please consider sponsoring a lunch. For just $250, you can co-sponsor one day’s lunch for over 150 people! Your name, organization, or someone you choose to honor will appear as the sponsor on our menu board for the day.

Thanks for connecting,

Donna

GBFB SURVEY:

1 IN 3 MA ADULTS FOOD INSECURE

Our major contributor to SKIP is the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), a member of Feeding America. The GBFB acquires and distributes food that enables local pantries, and soup kitchens like SKIP, in their effort to provide nutritious food. They recently performed a statewide survey that I found very impactful.  The biggest takeaway is that 1 in 3 adults in the state of Massachusetts are food insecure. ONE IN THREE! The data in this report also identifies 51% of the LGBTQ+ community as having food insecurity. To find out more on the Greater Boston Food Bank, visit https://www.gbfb.org/

MEET THE BOARD

SKIP is happy to announce the addition of two new board members, Eric Cordes, and Robert Sweetman.

Eric Cordes and his husband, David, have both been visiting Provincetown for nearly forty years. They purchased a home here in 2016. Prior to retiring in the spring of 2020, Eric worked as the principal administrator in a Boston law firm for thirty two years. This past season was Eric's first as a volunteer at SKIP, and he thoroughly enjoyed working with staff, fellow volunteers, board members, and our guests. When not at SKIP, you'll find Eric working at Waters Edge Cinema, volunteering for Center For Coastal Studies and Provincetown Conservation Trust, or at home puttering in the garden.

Robert (Rob) Sweetman joined the SKIP board in 2022 after volunteering with SKIP soon after his own “First Landing” in P-town in 2021. While a Massachusetts native, he has lived on both coasts as well as Japan and is thrilled to be home and be part of our community. He loves all animals, especially dogs, sloths, whales, and sea turtles. Nothing makes him happier than rescuing a cold-stunned turtle at 2AM along a lonely, dark and stormy beach and then helping cook and serve warm, delicious meals to a crowd at a SKIP lunch.

MEET LIAM McELHONE

We are excited to welcome Liam McElhone to the SKIP team! Liam started August 1st as our new Office Coordinator at SKIP.

Liam joins SKIP following a career leading operations for a number of software and service providers where he managed customer service, systems, and business process development. A long-time visitor to Cape Cod, he transitioned from part-time to full-time residence in 2020.

REMEMBRANCE

Florence Chaddock, a lifelong resident of Provincetown, died on May 9 at the age of 93. She went to elementary school in Provincetown, and had a number of jobs during her long life. She met her husband, Earle, when he was stationed at the Air Force Base in Truro; they married in 1953. Florence loved to dance, and loved participating in parades with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She spent time at the Gathering Place in Eastham and loved having lunch with her frien ds at SKIP. Florence leaves her granddaughter, Serena Carreiro of Ptown, and 2 great-granddaughters. Her family asked that donations in her honor go to SKIP (skipfood.org), Carrie A Seaman Animal Shelter (casanimalshelter.org) or Hospice of Cape Cod (hospicecapecod.org)

GUEST COLUMNIST

REETZ'S PIECES ON PIGGY'S

“Everybody knows Piggy’s!” proclaimed Rodney. Rodney Reetz moved here in 1972 and fondly recalls the year-round bar on 67 Shank Painter Road across from Stop and Shop (the white building). “It was a true townie bar, very mixed and nobody cared. Everyone got along great; it was the place to go and the place to be!”

Thanks to guest columnist Rodney Reetz for his take on town in the early 70s. If you’ve never heard of Piggy’s, Google it!
