SKIP SHOWS HOWIE IT'S DONE!

HOWIE.png

We’re proud to announce that SKIP has been honored with the Provincetown Community Partner Award for its “outstanding support” of the Helping Our Women (HOW) community. The HOWIE was awarded via Zoom on Tuesday, May 24. (HOWIES stands for Helping Our Women’s Inspirational & Exceptional Supporters.)

“We are so pleased to have this opportunity to highlight the many ways in which the SKIP team of volunteers and staff supports HOW’s mission,” said Gwynne Guzzeau, HOW’s chair and treasurer. “I want to emphasize the value you provide to our staff, not simply the women in our community who also receive SKIP services.”

“This award acknowledges the great community service provided by SKIP’s entire team—board, staff and volunteers,” said SKIP Chair Philip Franchini. “HOW’s recognition shows that SKIP’s daily services extend beyond our kitchen and dining room.”

In summing up the feelings shared by countless residents of the Outer Cape community, Guzzeau said: “SKIP restores my sense of resilience … especially during this time of the pandemic. The meal and table space at SKIP is often an oasis for me to pause in my workday and reconnect with … the mission of community health and wellness at the heart of our respective missions.”

ARTISTS AMONG US

Many of SKIP’s volunteers are talented in a variety of ways. In this issue, we are introducing you to several artists, some that show in galleries and others that have solo shows or pieces in upcoming shows at PAAM or The Commons. We hope you have some time to check out these artists as well as the large number of artists who work and show in Provincetown. FYI, Friday nights are Gallery Stroll, when galleries stay open later and often have openings, shows or artists available for you to meet them. Gallery Stroll officially begins on Friday, May 27th.

Martha Fagan

"SHIFTING LIGHT"

MARTHA_FAGAN_SAILBOAT.jpg

Martha Fagan is a SKIP volunteer and a member of the Board of Directors. She is having her first show at The Commons, titled SHIFTING LIGHT.  The exhibit runs from Tuesday, June 14 through Sunday, June 26. Opening reception is Saturday, June 18th from 5-7.

More information on Martha

"I am a plein air Impressionist painter and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I have worked with Hilda Neily, Margaret McWethy, Mary Giammarino, Joanette Egeli, and Peter Hocking.

I try to capture my impression and feeling in that moment and base my art on the shifting light and color placement. Nature has such variation and intensity of colors and I am in love with the spectacular contrasts of sand, sea, sky and the unique, brilliant light here."

"It wasn’t until my last child headed out the door that I pursued art. I earned a certificate in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design, and took my first plein air oil workshop in 2016 with master painter John Clayton, through the Cape School of Art. I am a member of Provincetown Art Association and Museum and my painting "Wharf" was accepted to the 2019 Members’ Juried Exhibit at PAAM. I recently had a painting at PAAM in Members' Open Exhibit : March 11 - May 8."

Lorraine has generously donated "OUT OF THE CLOUDS" to SKIP's Benefit Auction.

Lorraine Deprospo is a SKIP volunteer who works the serving line on Thursdays. She is represented by OUTERMOST HOME gallery, located at 427 Commercial Street (right next door to the Mews.) The gallery website is outermosthome.com and can also be found on instagram by searching ‘Outermost Home’. Info on upcoming special events will be posted.  Lorraine has donated a painting entitled "OUT OF THE CLOUDS" to the SKIP Into Summer auction running now.

More information on Lorraine:

"Coming from a sculptural background, my painting process is somewhat non-traditional and completely intuitive. I enjoy working large, which enables a broad, sweeping stroke of the tools employed in the meticulous blending of color to produce the subtle nuances and ‘moody’ feel that I believe defines my work. My short list of materials includes oil paint and canvas, a wax medium which adds a soft patina and an element of depth to the finished piece, and a cherished few pallet knives and scratching tools. I am strongly influenced by sea and sky, and particularly captivated by fog, the mainstay of my imagery, which translates visually for me in minimalist, abstract fashion, absent the need to replicate reality in neither color, shape, or form."

ELIZABETH LAZEREN DAGLIO

"CLOUD STUDY"

BID

Elizabeth "Liz" Lazeren Daglio is another SKIP volunteer who is a talented artist.  She has generously donated her painting entitled "CLOUD STUDY" to the SKIP into Summer benefit auction happening now!

More about Liz:

“Elizabeth is best known for her marine paintings that have a solitary and sublime melancholy.” - AMERICAN COLLECTOR magazine

The artist uses memory, experience, and imagination. She works toward paintings that have a clarity of mood but a vague sense of place. Choosing elements that are signature components of her work, she “distills” a painting, working towards the goal of emotional and intellectual clarity. Her paintings are in collections from Los Angeles to Newfoundland to the Hart Senate Building in Washington, D.C.

Her paintings can be found at: Gallery Antonia, Chatham, MA & at her studio in Truro, MA

JANE KOGAN

“NEW YORK GIRL"

KOGANART_NEWYORKGIRL.jpg

Jane Kogan is a SKIP volunteer in the kitchen on Mondays and Thursdays. She has a leaning towards semi-abstract still life, and is known for her very large canvases (7 feet high and up to 4 feet wide) of partly-clothed “Amazon Women”, a name dubbed by her friends, due to the size of the pieces. The piece above “NEW YORK GIRL” is on display at the Pilgrim Monument Museum (PMPM) now through November.

Jane describes "New York Girl":

“She's in a black coat---I had a sort of heavy plastic white one like that at the time, those were the Mod years---with a yellow cab, and the top of the Chrysler building behind her. Also, I was living then in Manhattan near a Con Ed. plant, and that is the building with a smoking chimney on the right, another similar chimney over her shoulder on the left. And one can see part of a bridge over a river, maybe the East River, maybe the Harlem river, as I lived at different times near one or the other.”

NOTE: Due to construction delays, Jane's show at the PAAM has been postponed until the summer 0f 2023.

GIVING THANKS

RaymondBay.jpg
RaymondCake.jpg

Last month we said goodbye to “Everybody Loves Raymond” Ingersoll as he moved south to Florida from his home in Provincetown where he has resided for 22 years. Raymond has been volunteering with SKIP for the past 4 years and joined the SKIP Board in 2019.  He has been co-chair of the operations team.

Raymond started coming to Provincetown for summers when he was young (12 or 13) with friends of his family from NYC. He moved to Boston from NYC in fall 1999, and he and his family got their first place in the summer of 2000. They rented a cottage full time, and then bought a house in 2005. Raymond was in the shoe business from 2000 until 2015 and then transitioned to Real Estate to spend more time with his family.

In Raymond’s words, “Provincetown has always been about the people for me. I have met some of the greatest friends and people that I will be in touch with for the rest of my days. Right behind the people is the natural beauty of the place and the smell of the salt air!! I will also miss my time at SKIP tremendously. The people and the community created by our one mission have been a true blessing. As of now my plans are to continue with Real Estate here in Florida once I get my license over the summer!!”

Congratulations on your move, Raymond! We will miss you both as a volunteer and as a board member. Best of luck in sunny Florida. Enjoy :-)
