NOVEMBER 2025

November ushers in the holiday season, long before this year’s late arrival of Thanksgiving. It’s never too soon to express our gratitude for all the volunteers, staff, board members and donors who make our meals and companionship possible.

We’re also thankful to be celebrating the 34th season of service to our community. What started as providing a meal to a few homeless men on the beach in 1992 has grown into today’s lunch service to some 200 people daily. As part of our fight to ease Outer Cape food insecurity and off-season isolation, we served some 25,000 meals last season. That number is expected to rise during these challenging times. And we plan to continue expanding our services to those whose needs are more pronounced during the fall and winter months.

In addition to our dine-in service, we’ve introduced a new year-round program, delivering nutritious meals to those with health, mobility and other qualifying issues. This two-day-a-week service is being expanded to three days, and we’re meeting with local organizations to find others who need our help.

Among our other services is Crop Swap, a year-round, free provider of fresh fruit and vegetables, located at the Provincetown Public Library. Then there are the supermarket gift cards we provide for distribution by Helping Our Women (HOW) and a church largely serving our Jamaican community. Additionally, a registered nurse takes guests’ blood pressure and assesses other health issues in twice monthly visits.

With Thanksgiving approaching, our turkeys are already on order, and our returning executive chef, Gina Larkin, is preparing to serve a delicious feast. Plans are also being made for our biggest fundraiser of the year, December’s “Souper” Saturday (watch for more details).

As we gather around SKIP’s holiday tables, we remember the importance of giving back. Whether by volunteering or making a donation, every little bit of generosity helps make the season brighter. The soup kitchen is a reminder that acts of kindness can make Thanksgiving—and every day—just a little bit better for everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at SKIP!

SKIP LUNCH DELIVERY

Third Day being added Week of December 8

In addition to SKIP’s regular seasonal lunch program, SKIP delivers a healthy lunch year-round to Provincetown residents who meet certain age and health condition requirements. Lunch is currently delivered two days per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning the week of December 8, a third day, Fridays will be added. Volunteers from Helping our Women (HOW) deliver lunches on Tuesday and SKIP Volunteers deliver on the other delivery days.

Currently, about 35 lunches are delivered each day. Meals are provided to meet dietary needs for gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan diets as well as unrestricted diets. Lunch can be provided on a permanent or temporary basis, such as for a person who is injured or recovering from surgery.

Many guests tell us how thankful they are for these meals and that they appreciate the interaction with the volunteers. And our drivers tell us how good it feels to provide this service.

If you are interested in learning more about the SKIP Lunch Delivery program or to volunteer as a Delivery Driver, please contact the SKIP Office Administrator at (508) 487-8331 or office@skipfood.org.

CHANGES IN SNAP BENEFITS

INCREASE FOOD INSECURITY

supermarket_family.jpg

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 (OBBBA), which made significant changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that all states must implement. These changes became effective in Massachusetts on November 1.

SNAP Client benefits will be reviewed and potentially change on a rolling basis at each client’s recertification. The effect of the OBBBA is two fold:

  • Certain non-citizens who newly apply starting on November 1st will not be eligible for SNAP. Certain non-citizens who already receive SNAP, but are impacted by these changed rules, will be ineligible as of their next certification period.

  • Beginning November 1, more people must meet the OBBBA’s provisions on Able Bodied Adults without Dependents work rule at application or recertification. This includes parents with teens 14+ years of age, homeless individuals, veterans, and people up to 65 years of age. Over the next year, it is expected up to approximately 99,000 more people in Massachusetts will be required to meet strict work requirements to keep SNAP benefits. Because of the confusing and administratively burdensome nature of these rules, many of these people could lose SNAP eligibility.

To get more information on the SNAP eligibility changes please contact SNAP Outreach Partners at:

https://www.mass.gov/info-details/snap-outreach-partners

This year, more than ever, the SKIP lunch programs are needed to help our residents who will no longer qualify for SNAP benefits. Please consider a donation to SKIP if you are able.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

NANCY McLANE

Nancy McLane joined our board in June and jumped right in with energy and enthusiasm! Nancy and her wife, Karen Click retired to Provincetown at the start of 2020. Nancy’s job as the Head of Operations for Medical Device and Diagnostics companies had the couple moving for over twenty years from Massachusetts to Texas to Florida and Pennsylvania. But Provincetown was always ‘home’ even though they could only visit their condo a few times a year.

Nancy and Karen are in their fifth year of volunteering at SKIP. Nancy oversees the year-round Lunch Delivery program with board colleague, Rachel Peters, and our partners at HOW.

When not at SKIP, Nancy and Karen can be found at the Provincetown Bark Park in the morning or walking their two rescue dogs, Winston and Tippi, all over town.
